Everton’s pre-season has been marked by an inconsistent run, following a 3-1 setback to German team Stuttgart in their fifth pre-season game of the summer.
David Moyes’ squad began preparations for the new season with a 4-0 victory against Dundee, before drawing 0-0 with Bolton Wanderers and defeating Stoke City 1-0 in their following two games. The Toffees then defeated Hamburger SV 2-1 earlier this month, before losing to Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon.
As they play their pre-season penultimate game tonight, they will welcome many players from the FIFA World Cup break. However, one of their stalwarts, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, will not feature against Newcastle United.
Pickford, who was expected to return to the Everton camp after representing England at the FIFA World Cup 2026, has not been seen so far in training.
The custodian was in action for the Three Lions during their World Cup campaign, where they reached the semi-final and lost to Argentina. As a result, the players participating in the competition were given an extended holiday to recuperate ahead of the new season.

Why did Jordan Pickford miss the game against Newcastle United?
Jordan Pickford has yet to be seen in training following his international outing for England at the FIFA World Cup; thus, he is not included in today’s matchday squad against Newcastle United. Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers has taken over in goal in his absence.
Moreover, it has not been confirmed when the goalkeeper will return to action for the Toffees, as Everton will conclude their pre-season against Lille.
He is likely to return at the start of the new season, and the Toffees will be expecting the 32-year-old to be present between the sticks when the new season begins.
