Top nine players with most goals in single Bundesliga season
The German top flight has been the hunting ground of many elite strikers over the years
Bundesliga is one of Europe’s top five leagues and has fielded some of football’s most iconic players. The likes of legends like Gerd Muller, Michael Ballack, Phillip Lahm and many more have played in the Bundesliga.
Many elite clinical strikers have played and made records in the Bundesliga as well. Here we take a look at the top nine players with the most goals in a single Bundesliga season.
9. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 31 (2016-17)
One of two players from a club besides Bayern Munich to make it on this list. Aubameyang was one of the best players in the world when at Borussia Dortmund, especially in the 2016-17 season.
Aubameyang scored 31 goals in 32 appearances for Dortmund. The Gabonese international even scored 4 goals in a single match against Hamburger SV. Despite not winning the Bundesliga, Aubameyang’s 2016-17 season is one of the best individual performances from a striker in the Bundesliga.
8. Dieter Muller – 34 ( 1976-77)
Yet another player from a club besides Bayern Munich to make it to this list. What’s even more astonishing is that Dieter Muller was not from a big club like Dortmund as well, he achieved this feat whilst at FC Koln.
Muller scored 34 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances in the 1976-77 season. This includes two pokers and two hat-tricks as well. Moreover, Muller helped FC Koln achieve qualification to the European Cup Winners Cup as well since Koln finished 5th in the table that season.
7. Robert Lewandowski – 34 ( 2019-2020)
It was in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season that Robert Lewandowski started coming close to breaking goalscoring records. Robert could not play the entire 2019-20 season due to a shin injury and eventually played 31 Bundesliga games.
Despite playing 3 games less, Robert Lewandowski finished with 34 goals in 31 Bundesliga games for Bayern Munich. The 2019-20 season was Just a glimpse of what Robert Lewandowski could do as he went on to break the top record next season.
6. Robert Lewandowski – 35 (2021-22)
One of the best strikers of our generation, Robert Lewandowski is a Bayern Munich legend. The Polish striker has made it onto this list not once but twice.
Bayern Munich as always ran rampant in the Bundesliga and won the league with the help of players like Lewandowski. Robert scored 35 goals in 34 appearances in the 2021-22 Bundesliga season.
Robert also had a good record against big teams in the German top flight that season. Lewandowski scored 3 goals in 2 matches against Borussia Dortmund and a brace against Leverkusen to give Bayern Munich a much needed boost.

5. Gerd Muller – 36 ( 1972-1973)
One of the best strikers ever to grace football, Gerd Muller was the leading figure of German football back then. Gerd was the topscorer in Bundesliga for three consecutive seasons spanning from 1969/70 to 1972/73.
Gerd Muller scored 36 goals in 33 games in the 1972-73 season. Gerd’s 5 goal haul against FC K’Lautern was one of his best performances in the 1972-73 season. Eventually, Muller’s scoring prowess helped Bayern defend their title and win the 1972-73 title as well.
4. Harry Kane – 36 (2023-24)
After an emotional departure from Tottenham Hotspurs, Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich and has been scoring consistently since day one. Harry Kane cemented himself as one of the best strikers in the world and in the Premier League.
He continued his goalscoring streak as he became the first player to score four hat-tricks in his debut Bundesliga season. This includes a hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund as well. As of now, Harry Kane has 36 Bundesliga goals in his first season Bayern’s star players can definitely top or match Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals in the German top flight in the upcoming seasons.
3. Gerd Muller – 38 (1969-1970)
The Bayern Munich legend held the goalscoring records in the German top flight until Robert Lewandowski broke them. Muller did it first in 1969-1970 when he scored 38 goals in 33 Bundesliga games. Overall, Gerd Muller has scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga appearances making him one of the topscorers of the league.
The German legend had two hat-tricks and two pokers (4 goals) in the 1969-70 Bundesliga season for Bayern Munich.
2. Gerd Muller – 40 (1971-72)
The Bayern legend held this record until Robert Lewandowski broke it in the 2020-21 season. Gerd Muller absolutely smashed the goalscoring charts in the 1971-72 season. Muller scored 40 goals and had 17 assists in 34 Bundesliga appearances.
Gerd Muller had an astounding season with 4 hat-tricks, a poker and a 5 goal haul in the 1971-72 season. Overall, Gerd Muller dominated the Bundesliga that season and helped Bayern won the league.
1. Robert Lewandowski – 41 (2020-21)
It took a Bayern Munich legend to surpass yet another legend Bayern Munich’s record. Robert Lewandowski was on fire in the 2020-21 Bundesliga season. The former Bayern Munich legend broke Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in the 2020-21 season.
The Polish striker scored an astounding 41 goals in just 29 Bundesliga appearances. Robert scored a hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund that too in an away fixture. Overall he had scored 4 hat-tricks, had a poker and amounted his goal tally to 41 in just 29 appearances. Arguably the best ever individual season in the Bundesliga from any player.
