Hansi Flick's men were desperate to bounce back from their heavy Copa del Rey defeat but proved incredibly wasteful in the first half. Raphinha struck the post, and on the stroke of halftime, Barça were handed a golden opportunity when Daley Blind fouled Dani Olmo in the box. However, Lamine Yamal saw his resulting penalty crash against the upright.

Barcelona finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Jules Kounde delivered a pinpoint cross, and defender Pau Cubarsí [59'] rose to score a sensational header into the top corner. The lead, however, lasted barely two minutes. Girona hit back instantly as Vladyslav Vanat helped set up Thomas Lemar [61'], who tapped in from close range to level the scores.

With the game hanging in the balance and Barca keeper Joan Garcia forced into crucial saves, it was Girona who found the magic. Substitute Fran Beltrán [86'] controlled the ball on the edge of the box and lasered a low shot into the bottom corner. Despite heavy Barcelona protests for an alleged foul on Kounde in the build-up, the goal stood. Girona finished with 10 men after Joel Roca [90+'] was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Yamal, but Michel's side held on for a famous win.
