Five Premier League clubs with longest active record of avoiding a penalty
Not giving away a penalty is a sign of a good defence and few teams achieve it for a long time.
The Premier League is quick and physically intense. It also sees a lot of penalties awarded by the referees due to the nature of the game. There are numerous fouls in the box and the introduction of VAR ensures none escape the officials. In the ongoing 2021-22 league campaign, three teams have received eight penalties already, namely Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, there are a few clubs that are experts at not conceding penalties. In fact, Liverpool FC are current holders of the record of having the longest run of not giving away a penalty to the opposition. The Reds have gone 46 matches without conceding a penalty, which is a remarkable feat.
For context, here is a look at five teams that have the longest active run of not conceding a penalty in the Premier League:
5. Aston Villa - 14
Aston Villa is a historically successful club with seven English league titles under it’s belt. It has also won the European Championship (UEFA Champions League) once. The club is on a 14 match streak of not conceding a penalty, the fifth best run in the competition.
Steven Gerrard is currently the manager of the outfit. The former Rangers boss has the difficult task to keep the team above the relegation zone. Not conceding goals through penalties will help in achieving the goal.
4. Newcastle United - 18
Newcastle United is the richest club in the world since it’s takeover by the consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The outfit were struggling in the beginning of the season, with no wins from first 14 fixtures. Since then, after Eddie Howe’s appointment as manager, the club has been unstoppable.
The Magpies are in the top ten places after a string of good results. They are on a 18-match run of not conceding a penalty. The club can plan for the future with the relegation successfully avoided.
3. Everton FC - 19
Everton FC is one of the traditional clubs which has been in the Premier League since 30 years. However, the club is involved in a very gripping relegation battle. Despite the unfortunate results and their position at the table, EFC has been actively avoiding conceding a penalty.
The club has gone 19 games without giving away a spotkick to the opposition. If Frank Lampard’s men are to avoid the drop into EFL Championship, then this record must extend.
2. Manchester City - 24
Manchester City is a complete team with very little weaknesses. Their defence is as astute as their attack, allowing no breathing space for the opposition. Pep Guardiola’s men have not conceded a penalty in 24 matches, which is an incredible feat but not too surprising for the club’s standards.
The Cityzens are one of the two contenders for the Premier League trophy in the current campaign. In order to achieve this objective, the club must continue to stay on the same course and avoid conceding penalties.
1. Liverpool - 46
Liverpool FC currently holds the Premier League record for the longest active run of not conceding a penalty. The Reds are involved in a two-horse race for the title with Manchester City. Furthermore, their record exceeds the current season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are composed in defence, led by Virgil van Dijk. Their exceptional record will take an extra-ordinary effort to be broken. Furthermore, one should expect the Reds to extend their ongoing run of 46 games without conceding a penalty.
