Real Madrid’s Alaba left out of the squad due to injury.

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick has named his 29-man provisional squad for Euro 2024, with veteran defender David Alaba the notable absentee. Alaba is still recovering from a knee injury sustained in December while playing for Real Madrid and will not be able to participate in the upcoming tournament.

Rangnick acknowledged the blow, stating, “It’s a great pity to lose Alaba’s leadership and experience on the pitch.” However, he revealed Alaba will join the team as a non-playing member offering guidance and support to his teammates throughout the tournament.

The squad features a blend of experience and youth, with established stars like Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer alongside exciting young talents like Florian Kainz and Konrad Laimer. Arnautovic, Austria’s all-time top scorer, will be crucial in leading the attack, while Sabitzer provides creativity and dynamism in midfield.

David Alaba picked up a treacherous injury while playing for Real Madrid and is still to recover. Alaba’s injury is a massive setback for Austria with the experience and leadership he brings to the squad.

In Alaba’s absence, the defensive responsibility falls on the shoulders of Kevin Danso, Stefan Lainer, and Philipp Lienhart. Gernot Trauner, who has impressed in Serie A with Feyenoord, is another option at center-back. Goalkeeper duties are likely contested between Heinz Lindner and Patrick Pentz, with both boasting experience at the international level.

Austria find themselve in a challenging Group D for Euro 2024 alongside France, Poland, and the Netherlands. Rangnick will have to make some tough decisions before finalizing his 26-man squad by June 7th.

Austria’s journey to Euro 2024 has been a testament to their resilience. Despite facing a tough group and the absence of their captain, they possess a talented squad with a good mix of experience and youth. With Rangnick at the helm and a passionate fanbase behind them, Austria can cause some upsets in Germany this summer.
