The competition saw several high-profile players delivering memorable performances.

Real Madrid emerged as the champions of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. They defeated Borussia Dortmund by a 2-0 scoreline in the final at the Wembley Stadium in London on 2 June 2024. The fixture closed the curtains on an eventful UCL campaign that saw high-octane action across the group and knockout stages.

There were plenty of memorable performances by world-class individuals who outclassed the rest of the competition in the process of achieving success for their respective teams. Be it the goalkeepers making decent saves, defenders putting their bodies on the line, midfielders showing their creativity or forwards scoring sensational goals, there was entertainment for the viewers.

Looking back at the highly enjoyable 2023-24 UEFA Champions League campaign, here are the players that make Khel Now’s Team of the Tournament:

Formation: 4-4-2

GK: Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund)

Gregor Kobel made the most saves of all the goalkeepers in the campaign with 46 of them. Borussia Dortmund relied heavily on their backline and goalkeeper, performing well to navigate past a tough group stage and the knockout fixtures. He finished the term with six clean sheets, most for a goalkeeper.

RB: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Dani Carvajal was sensational for Real Madrid throughout the campaign. However, the experienced full-back saved the best performance for the final. He kept Borussia Dortmund attackers silent and scored the opening goal on the night.

CB: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Mats Hummels was in a different league than the rest of his teammates and led the backline expertly for Dortmund. His performances against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final were particularly noteworthy and the centre-back was unlucky to come away with the runners-up medal in the end. He also played 1170 minutes of football, the most in the competition for an individual.

CB: Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid)

Antonio Rudiger was a consistent performer in Real Madrid’s defence during the 2023-24 campaign. The defender played 1039 minutes of football during the tournament, second most in Real Madrid’s squad behind Federico Valverde.

LB: Joao Cancelo (FC Barcelona)

While FC Barcelona underperformed and got eliminated in the quarter-final stage of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League, Joao Cancelo was one of the players who could hold his head high. He made second-most tackles (32) and interceptions (19) in the campaign, delivering important performances in defence.

CM: Marcel Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund)

Marcel Sabitzer had an extremely positive campaign for the runners-up side. He looked at home despite signing for the club earlier this season. The 30-year-old scored once and provided five assists.

CM: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

Jude Bellingham dominated across all competitions for Los Blancos, having an excellent debut season at the club. He scored 23 goals and made 13 assists out of which nine goal contributions came from the 11 appearances in the 2023-24 Champions League campaign.

UEFA Champions League 2023-24: Team of the tournament

RW: Rodrygo (Real Madrid)

Rodrygo’s contribution towards Real Madrid winning the 15th Champions League title cannot be understated. The winger troubled every opposition he faced, thanks to his tenacity and technical brilliance. He scored five goals, made two assists and played over 1021 minutes of football in the tournament.

LW: Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

Kylian Mbappe’s last Champions League campaign for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Real Madrid did not have a fairytale ending. Despite him scoring eight goals (joint top), the Parisians could not navigate past the semi-final stage, ending another year of disappointment for Mbappe who delivered the goods on an individual front.

ST: Vinicius Jr (Real Madrid)

Vinicius Jr was a firecracker throughout the 2023-24 Champions League campaign and made a central contribution to Real Madrid winning the title. He scored the second goal in the final, ending any hopes of a Dortmund comeback. The winger, in totality, scored six goals and provided five assists in 10 appearances.

ST: Harry Kane (FC Bayern Munich)

Harry Kane had a brilliant season individually, despite FC Bayern Munich failing to win the Bundesliga or the UEFA Champions League. The striker did his utmost to help the club with eight goals (joint most) and four assists in 12 appearances but it was not meant to be for the English international who ended another season without a trophy.
