Manchester United have booked their 2024-25 UEL league phase spot with win in the FA Cup final
A major overhaul is about to happen from the 2024-25 season. The UEFA Europa League is about to change drastically in terms of the pre-knockout phase format we are used to so far. This change goes hand in hand with the UEFA Champions League as well.
Until now, 2023-24 season, eight groups with four clubs each started the group stage. In this mode, every club was facing the other three in their group for a total of two times each – one at home and one away. But this system will be scraped from here on.
The 2024-25 Europa League will feature 36 teams in total. And now we will see these 36 clubs moving up and down in the pre-knockout stage entirely in a standalone league instead of groups. Also instead of the previous three opponents for each team, now we will see each outfit take on three different opponents. The manner of that however will be the same – home and away fixture.
After the final league table is compiled, the top eight sides move to the Round of 16. Then sides from the ninth standing up to the 24th will have to fight in the knockout playoffs. The final result will be eight more teams who can now join the Round of 16 stage.
Thereafter it’s the usual UEFA competition format- Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.
Confirmed 2024-25 Europa League teams so far and the allotted pots
There will be qualifying rounds from July till the end of August, which will add more teams to the final league. The first, second and third qualifying rounds are from 11th July and will function till 15th August. Thereafter from 22 August till 29 August, the playoffs will be played out. AFC Ajax are one such club that will be active during this period.
So far 12 teams have officially made it and will be playing the league phase of the freshly formatted Europa League from the 2024-25 season. This includes two Premier League sides namely Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. While Spurs finished fifth in the PL to secure a place, United earned the wild card entry.
The Red Devils defeated Manchester City in the 2023-24 FA Cup finals to book a UEL league phase place. Other big names include – AS Roma, Lazio and Real Sociedad. OGC Nice who finished fifth in Ligue 1 will also compete in the second tier of European football.
