Copa America 2024: Full Format Explained

Argentina will open the Copa America event against Canada

Eight of the 16 eligible teams can go past the Group stage according to the Copa America 2024 format and play for a berth in the final in as little as three weeks.

The last tournament, 2021 was post the outbreak of COVID-19. There were fewer teams, games and even spectators in the competition during that event held in Brazil. Thankfully, the pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted and the historic international competition is back in full-fledged mode after just three years.

As a matter of fact, 32 matches will be played throughout the Copa America 2024 between 10 CONMEBOL teams and 6 CONCACAF teams, including the host country, the United States. The additional teams added have greatly altered the tournament’s schedule in comparison to the Copa America 2021, beginning with the Group stage.

The Format of Copa America 2024 Explained

Unlike most significant international competitions, the Copa America 2024 structure is reasonably simple to grasp. The competition’s opening matches are decided by the four groups into which the 16 qualified teams are divided:

  • Group A: Argentina, Peru, Chile, Canada
  • Group B: Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Jamaica
  • Group C: USA, Uruguay, Panama, Bolivia
  • Group D: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Costa Rica

In the Group stage, each team will play each of the other three teams in their group once. The top two teams from each group will then move on to the Knockout stage.

In the quarterfinals, those eight teams will play each other. The opponents for the quarters will be decided by this method: Each group’s champion will play the other group’s runners-up. The complete visual for understanding the quarter-final stage:

  • QF1: Winner of Group A vs. Runner-up of Group B
  • QF2: Winner of Group B vs. Runner-up of Group A
  • QF3: Winner of Group C vs. Runner-up of Group D
  • QF4: Winner of Group D vs. Runner-up of Group C

The semifinals will thereafter feature a match between the four winners of each round. While the champions of QF3 and QF4 will square off at Bank of America Stadium, the winning teams from QF1 and QF2 will play at MetLife Stadium.

Then, the two failures from the semifinals will battle for third place on 14 July. A day later, the two winners of the semi-final fixtures square off in the championship final match to decide the 2024 Copa America winner.
