Austria face Turkey in the Last 16 of the Euro.

Austria, a tournament dark horse, showcased an impressive performance in the Euro 2024 group stage by topping Group D, which featured formidable teams such as France, the Netherlands, and Poland. Under Ralf Rangnick’s guidance, Austria’s high-pressing style and aggressive tactics made them a formidable opponent.

Their campaign started with a narrow 1-0 loss to tournament favorites France, courtesy of an own goal by defender Maximilian Wober. Despite this setback, Austria bounced back strongly in their next game against Poland, securing a convincing 3-1 victory with a dominant attacking display.

In a crucial match against the Netherlands, Austria secured a thrilling 3-2 win on the final matchday. This victory, coupled with France’s surprising draw against already-eliminated Poland, propelled Austria to the top of Group D

Round of 16: Red Bull Arena (Leipzig), Wednesday, July 3, 12:30 AM (IST) I 02-07-24, 03:00 PM (EST)

Austria will play Turkey in the round of 16

Group D table toppers Austria will now face Turkey in the round of 16, who finished second in Group F level on points with first place Portugal. Turkey beat the Czech Republic in their final group game through a stoppage-time goal by striker Cenk Tosun to seal a 2-1 win and secure the second-place finish.

Despite already overcoming powerhouse nations during the group stage phase, Austria needs to be geared up and alert against Turkiye, who can prove to be a tricky opponent to overcome on their day.

Quarter-final: Olympiastadion Berlin (Berlin), Sunday, July 7

If Austria manages to get past their round of 16 opponents, then they will be facing the winners of the match Romania vs. Netherlands in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.

The Netherlands too was a part of Group D alongside Austria, where they managed to finish third in the group, whereas Romania surpassed all expectations as they qualified for the knockout rounds by topping a tough Group E consisting of the likes of Belgium and Ukraine.

Semi-final: Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund), Thursday, July 11

Should Austria make it to the final four of Euro 2024, their most likely opponents at this stage could either be tournament favourites England or defending champions Italy, both of whom, despite their poor campaigns, are potentially the best teams in the world. A potential out-of-the-box candidate could possibly be Switzerland, who are enjoying a dream run in this tournament so far, having finished second in Group A with an unbeaten record.

Final: Olympiastadion Berlin (Berlin), Monday, July 15

If Austria somehow manages to pull off the unthinkable and make it to the final of Euro 2024 under coach Ralf Rangnick, then they would be most likely facing the best nations on the other side of the draw: Spain, Germany, Portugal, or France.
