They didn't let me compete: Lionel Messi hits back at MLS after return from suspension with two assists in Inter Miami's Leagues Cup opener

The Argentine star returned to action against Atlas in the Leagues Cup.
Lionel Messi was back in action for Inter Miami against Atlas in the opening Leagues Cup and provided two assists in their 2-1 win. However, following the match, he raised concerns regarding his one-match ban against Cincinnati.
Argentina’s greatest Messi was banned from playing against FC Cincinnati’s goalless draw with the Herons, and he was limited to a spectator position in that match after missing the 2025 MLS All-Star Game with teammate Jordi Alba.
Many people believed that Messi may benefit from rest, given his recent busy calendar, which included the FIFA Club World Cup. However, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner insists that he needs consistent appearances to keep up his momentum.
He recorded two assists in a 2-1 victory over Mexican team Atlas in the Leagues Cup opening, seemingly having little trouble shaking off any rust. The fact that MLS felt compelled to discipline Lionel Messi, however, still disappoints him.
Messi’s disappointed with his one-match ban
Messi said after returning to action against Atlas: “The truth is that it was difficult with the heat, and not having played the other day. Even if [the rest] seems better, for me it’s worse because I need to compete.
“I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm. The other day they didn’t let me compete, and I felt it in the first half, but the important thing is that we won.”

Messi, who has scored or assisted 21 of Inter Miami’s previous 27 goals, said in reference to the team’s successful start to yet another pursuit of big hardware.
”The format has altered so we can play and enjoy it, and it’s a fantastic challenge for us to play Mexican teams. The competition is fantastic. [The win] is really significant.”
