Olympiacos lift Europa Conference League 2023-24; Ayoub El Kaabi scores winning goal

The first Greek side to win a major European honour

Olympiacos defeated Fiorentina in extra time and lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023-24. Ayoub El Kaabi scored the only goal of the game deep into extra time. They created history by becoming the first Greek side to win a major honour. Fiorentina suffered back-to-back defeats in the Conference League finals.

Olympiacos and Fiorentina clashed in the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023-24 final at the OPAP Arena in Greece. Both managers named a strong side for this European final.

Konstantinos Tzolakis started in goal for the Greek club. Ortega, Carmo, Retsos and Rodinei completed the backline. Vicente Iborra added experience to the midfield and played alongside Hezze in the centre of the park. Podence, Chiqunho and Fortounis were the creative forces behind Golden Boot winner, Ayoub El Kaabi.

Andrea Belotti led Fiorentina’s attack. Nico Gonzalez, Kouame and Bonaventura supported him in the attack. Arthur and Mandragora were the two midfielders for the Italian side. Cristiano Biraghi, Milenkovic, Martinez and Dodo were the back four in front of Pietro Terraacciano.

The first half began with plenty of excitement. Both teams were loose and couldn’t make the most of their chances. Fiorentina created more chances but blasted most of the shots over the bar. The Greek side were more accurate with their shooting. These two teams took less risk and this resulted in a goalless first half.

The second half was pretty much the same as the first half. Both clubs failed to break the deadlock and the match headed into extra time.

Both teams were giving their best in the additional 30 minutes. The match was heading to penalties, but the tournament’s best player had some other ideas. He scored a header late in the 116th minute to win the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023-24 for his side.
