Julian Nagelsmann has announced his preliminary squad for the Euro 2024

The German football team has massively underperformed over the years. Ever since winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Germany has not won a single international trophy. After years of struggling and change in various managers, Germany is looking very strong this year.

The likes of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Toni Kroos and many more are some in-form and strong players in the squad. Julian Nagelsmann has made his pick and has included many capable and extraordinary players which makes Germany’s team a force to reckon with.

However, there are still some players who could have made it to the list but were left out and not chosen. All of these players are definitely good enough and have a chance to be called up if needed due to any injuries within the 27-man preliminary squad.

Let’s take a look at the top five players missing out on Germany‘s squad for the Euro 2024.

5. Marco Reus

The Loyal One, Marco Reus is a true and passionate Borussia Dortmund player. Marco Reus has been in Borussia Dortmund’s 2013 UCL squad as well which made it to the finals. Despite losing it and losing the league every year, Reus still stayed and now has helped Borussia Dortmund to reach another UCL final.

Marco Reus has garnered 6 goals and 7 assists in 25 Bundesliga appearances this season. His overall goal/assist tally has been low this season due to not starting all games. However, Reus contributes more to the game than just goals and assists.

Furthermore, his contribution on the field over the years for both club and especially Germany’s team has built up a lot of invaluable experience. Such experience could have definitely helped Germany’s young and thriving squad as many talented youngsters are set to play their first-ever Euros.

4. Julian Brandt

One more Borussia Dortmund player to miss out on the Euro 2024. Julian Brandt has definitely impressed everyone with his performances this season. The midfielder has racked up 25 goal contributions (10 goals and 15 assists) this season. Moreover, he has played a crucial role in Borussia Dortmund’s road to the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.

What’s more shocking is that Julian Nagelsmann has included Hiedenheim’s Jan Niklas Beste who plays in a similar role to Julian Brandt’s.

3. Leon Goretzka

Just a very unfortunate exclusion. Julian Nagelsmann has a different vision with Germany’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024. The former Bayern Munich manager intends to play a proper defensive midfielder alongside Toni Kroos. It is likely that Toni Kroos will play alongside Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich with FC Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan playing ahead of them.

The 27-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder has a hard pill to swallow adding onto the pain after losing a tough match against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Semi-finals.

2. Karim Adeyemi

Adeyemi has been inconsistent for the first half of the season but has changed entirely during the second half. Adeyemi has become more consistent and confident in his dribbling abilities as well. Despite not scoring or assisting much, his performances have stepped up and he’s making an impact on the game for Borussia Dortmund.

Adeyemi is the third player in this list from Borussia Dortmund to not make it to the German squad for the Euro 2024.

1. Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels

Definitely the most undeserving exclusion in this list. Hummels has proved that age is just a number and has shown his defensive prowess this season. Hummels has been leading the defensive line for Borussia Dortmund this season and has been stellar as Dortmund reached the UCL final.

Moreover he has been key in big games as well against Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and especially against Paris Saint Germain. Hummels has also stopped Kylian Mbappe as well on some occasions in the Paris Saint Germain which was very crucial since Mbappe is quite unstoppable.

Unfortunately, this was not enough as Julian Nagelsmann prefers Antonio Rudiger, Tah and other defenders over Mats Hummels. Hummels will go down in history as one of the most underrated centre-backs ever produced by the German football team.
