Red Bull acquire minority stake in Championship side Leeds United
The energy drinks firm will also become the team’s official kit partner
Red Bull have acquired a minority stake in Leeds United following the completion of an investment that will see the energy drink company become a part of the club’s ownership structure.
The firm are not a new entrant in this sport as they already have poured money into a cluster of clubs that include RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.
The announcement that Leeds and Red Bull have reached an agreement after productive negotiations with 49ers Enterprises, the team’s principal owner, was made on Thursday. Starting from the upcoming season, the multinational company will also sponsor the team’s jersey, taking over as the primary partner from BOXT, the supplying and installing company around boilers.
Red Bull have a history of renaming teams, which can be seen in the cases of RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls, but there is no indication that the Peacocks will be renamed to correspond with the company’s recent investment.
The Athletic claim that the Championship side have made it known that there would be no debate about changing the venue’s name, the club’s title or the colour of the team’s uniform.
It’s also rumoured that as part of their share purchase, Red Bull will not have a seat on Leeds’ board, which means they won’t have a final say over club matters. The 49ers retain all authority over the fund, comprised of multiple parties and individuals, with additional investors contributing varying sums of money.
