The Portuguese head coach suffered his five defeats as Red Devils head coach.
After Manchester United’s 2-0 home loss to Newcastle, Ruben Amorim has bluntly admitted that his team are in a relegation battle.
At this point in the Premier League season, United are seven points over the relegation zone in 14th place with 22 points. The setback, which included goals by Joelinton and Alexander Isak in the first half, is United’s fourth straight loss across all competitions and the first time they had lost three straight home league games since 1978–79.
The manager of United called the scenario “a little bit embarrassing” and emphasized how crucial it is to win games in order to stay in the league.
Amorim’s worries are evident as the squad is in 14th position, seven points above the relegation zone, after losing five of six games in the league and four straight in all competitions.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he revealed: “That is really clear and we have to fight. It is a really difficult moment, one of worst moments in the history of Manchester United”. “We have to address it with honesty and to be clear with that, we have to fight next game”.
Next stop Liverpool
The challenging trip to Liverpool, the league leaders, on Sunday, is the next match and it will be one of the biggest games for the former Sporting CP head coach given the Reds are in hot form and will be looking to capitalize on the Red Devils embarrassing form.
Amorim inherited a group that was not designed for his 3-4-3 shape. The head coach was questioned about why he didn’t put it into effect during the off-season.
“When you have a change of coach, especially in this type of club, it is because they were not winning,” he said. “They play in the system they were bought for and were losing. So I am going to change to that system? This team was already in trouble.”
Despite being the poorest-performing United manager in 103 years after suffering five losses in his first eight league games, Amorim won’t have much money to bolster his team next month unless there are significant sales.
