Virgil van Dijk shares positive update on new Liverpool contract

The Dutchman’s current deal will expire at the end of the season.

According to captain Virgil van Dijk, there has been “progress” in talks with Liverpool on a new deal. The centre-back’s current deal will expire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old centre-back stated in March that he had “no idea” if he would stay at Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

The defender is one of three well-known Liverpool players whose contracts are coming to an end; Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah have not yet signed extensions. However, the right-back has been reported to be joining Real Madrid in the summer.

However, Van Dijk seemed more upbeat about the possibility of continuing with the team when he spoke to the media after Sunday’s 3-2 loss at Fulham.

“There is progress, yeah,” said the Netherlands captain. “I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see. I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.”

Despite their loss in West London, Liverpool lead the Premier League by 11 points. The setback at Craven Cottage was their first in 26 games and just their second league loss of the year.

“But I want them to be there on Sunday again [at home to West Ham United] and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

“It was a poor day at the office for all of us,” Van Dijk added. ”There were individual moments that should have been dealt with better. It was not acceptable as a team.”

In 2018, Van Dijk moved from Southampton to Liverpool for a £75 million fee. He was the main defender when Jurgen Klopp’s team won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the EFL Cup twice. He also has 26 goals in 323 games for the Reds.
