In the heart of Melbourne’s Albert Park lies a treasure cherished by motorsport enthusiasts worldwide – the Australian Grand Prix trophy.
Beneath its glossy exterior is a tale of workmanship, heritage, and respect for one of the greatest figures in motorsport history. The Australian GP trophy is a classic representation of racing greatness, and fans of Formula 1 look forward to the thunder of engines and the exhilaration of wheel-to-wheel action.
Significance and Origin of the Trophy
Symbol of Victory and Perseverance
The Australian GP trophy isn’t just a piece of metal – it’s a symbol of victory and perseverance. Its practical design doubles as a shield during the electrifying post-race celebrations and enhances podium photographs with its reflective surface. Despite its modest weight, the trophy’s significance far exceeds its physical presence.
Originating from a rich history of motorsport greatness, the Australian GP shield trophy has remained unchanged for over 20 years, defying the modern trend of selling naming rights.
Its unique design pays homage to one of Australia’s motorsport legends, Sir Jack Brabham, a three-time Formula 1 world champion.
Inspired by the steering wheel of Brabham’s 1959 Cooper-Climax T51, the trophy is a true reflection of racing heritage and achievement.
The back of the trophy is made from a strong material called carbon fiber. It might not seem heavy, but it actually weighs 8kg. Imagine how a driver would feel after racing around Albert Park at over 300kph for two hours!

Craftsmanship and Legacy
Crafting the Australian GP shield is no ordinary task. It requires up to 120 hours of meticulous craftsmanship by Flynn Silver, a revered family-run business in Victoria.
Inspired by the desire for uniqueness, Dan Flynn, the creative force behind the trophy’s design, drew inspiration from Wimbledon’s Venus Rosewater Dish, infusing the trophy with timeless elegance and sophistication.
He added, “Ron Walker didn’t want a cup, and I knew I didn’t want to do a cup. I thought of the ladies’ singles trophy at Wimbledon (the Venus Rosewater Dish), that beautiful embossed tray, and how that looks.”
Following Sir Jack Brabham’s passing in 2014, the trophy was officially renamed the Sir Jack Brabham Trophy, honouring his enduring legacy and contribution to the sport. This symbolic gesture reflects the profound respect and admiration for Brabham’s unparalleled achievements both on and off the track.
The journey of the Australian GP Shield begins in a factory in Victoria, just an hour away from Melbourne.
Flynn Silver, a well-established family-run business, took on the task of bringing Dan Flynn’s vision to life after the Australian GP moved to Albert Park in 1996. Inspired by a desire for uniqueness, Flynn drew inspiration from Wimbledon’s Venus Rosewater Dish, crafting a trophy that would stand the test of time.
Flynn reflects on the creation process, “I remember quickly excusing myself at home to go to the local pub with pencil and paper, and stayed there until I nutted something out! But I think it had been in the back of my head, ticking over what we would do as we’d never done a trophy before then.”
In essence, the Australian Grand Prix trophy is more than just a shiny prize—it’s a symbol of Formula 1’s rich history and the incredible feats of racing legends. As drivers strive for glory on the Albert Park circuit, the Australian GP trophy stands as a shining reminder of their skill and determination.
