Can Sony learn from its mistakes?
We are coming close to the end of the PS5 era and fans are now hyped for the PS6 next-gen console, which is rumored to release in late 2027 or 208.
Sony has suffered a lot by focusing more on the live service games, but this is the chance to redeem themself by focusing more towards single player titles with the next console.
A reader’s piece in Metro.co.uk, published May 18, 2025, claims that the PS6 could be Sony’s chance to “wipe the slate clean” following the PS5’s troubles with unsuccessful live-service efforts such as Concord and Fairgame$.
PS5’s Live-Service misadventure
Despite selling 77.8 million units by March 2025, per Sony’s Q1 report, fans believe that PS5 generation still feels hollow.
Early successes like as Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales led to a shift toward live-service games, fueled by the appeal of microtransaction money.
Sony’s only success in this field was Helldivers 2 (12 million units sold, per IGN), which was developed externally by Arrowhead.
Concord, a $200 million flop that shut down after two weeks, and delays for Fairgame$ and Marathon reveal a strategy that alienated key fans, as noticed on X by @PS5Fanatic.
Now, both Fairgame$ and Marathon are facing huge controversy and things are not looking good for Sony.
Fans think that Sony chased infinite profits to impress the investors and ignoring the low success rate of live service games.
PS6: A return to roots?
The latest rumors reported by Reuters suggest that PS6 will launch with a traditional single-player focus, potentially headlined by Horizon Zero Dawn 3. (In development)
So, unlike the PS5 live service push, it is expected that the next gen will focus more on the single-player title.
According to Metro, the rumored PlayStation Portable could further shift Sony’s focus toward “proper games,” as live-service titles struggle on handhelds.
A portable gadget would require engaging single-player experiences, such as Spider-Man 2’s 11 million sales, to succeed, potentially pushing Sony to reconsider its goals for PS6.
It’s just miss after miss with live service games and recent controversy with Marathon and Fairgame$ might be the last straw for Sony.
Some “Industry expert” says that single-player titles are dead and not the way for the future. But till now, all the success, profits and best games that have been released till now are all single-player titles.
