India will start its campaign against Spain
The Indian men’s hockey team is set to begin its journey in the Men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24, a prestigious international tournament that offers a direct entry to the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The team will host eight matches in Odisha, against four different opponents, starting from Saturday.
The Odisha leg of the FIH Pro League 2023-24 will see the Indian hockey team play twice against Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and Australia. The first matches against all four teams will take place at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar from February 10 to 16, while the second matches will be held at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela from February 19 to 25.
India will face Spain in their first match of the season on February 10 in Bhubaneswar. Spain is currently ranked eighth in the world and has a young and energetic squad. The next day, India will meet the Netherlands, the world No. 1, who have been in impressive form in the FIH Pro League, winning three out of four matches so far.
India, the second-best ranked team in the Odisha leg of the FIH Pro League 2023-24, will also play against Australia, ranked sixth, on February 15 and Ireland, ranked 11th, on February 16 in Bhubaneswar. Australia is a formidable opponent, having won the FIH Pro League 2020-21 and the FIH Hockey World Cup 2018. Ireland, on the other hand, is making its debut in the FIH Pro League, after finishing second in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2022-23.
The Indian men’s hockey team will then move to Rourkela, where it will play the second matches against the same four opponents from February 19 to 25. Rourkela is one of the venues for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2023, which India will host for the second consecutive time. The team will hope to get familiar with the conditions and the crowd in Rourkela, ahead of the mega event.
