Calangute Association end their GPL campaign with win over Churchill Brothers
Josley Dias’ second half goal made the difference in the match.
Calangute Association down Churchill Brothers Sports Club by a solitary goal in their last match of the Goa Professional League played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
Calangute coach Alex Alvares made two changes to his side which defeated Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the last match as Josley Dias was back in the starting XI, while he also gave the start to Runal Shirodkar. Churchill, on the other hand, had only one change to their side following a massive win over FC Bardez in the last round match as Rohan Adnaik found the place in Alfred Fernandes’ XI.
The match witnessed drub football from both the sides where both the teams tried to keep the ball in the midfield, which ended with a swift move from the Red Machines in the 37th minutes when winger Nicholas Fernandes made a drifting run on the left wing and curled the ball to Trinidadian forward Willis Plaza in the box who nutmegged onrushing Calangute keeper Jason D’Mello with his first touch but defender Amar Halankar rescued his side with a timely goal-line clearance.
Calangute also had a chance to break the deadlock in the closing stage of the first session when Josley sent a perfect corner in the box but substitute Ashok Megheri who replaced injured Blake Haldankar a few moments before shot sky-high from the goalmouth.

Churchill U-20 Sevlon Cardozo and Arvind Silva made way for Pankaj Sona and Valerio Rodrigues at the half-time, while injured Kyrgyzstani midfielder Bektur Uulu was replaced by Banpynkhrawnam N. as their coach used all the substitution to sharpen them in the attacks.
However, it was Calangute who surprised the I-League outfits with an opening goal in the 56th minutes when their tricky midfielder Josley brilliantly headed in the back of the nylons off Domnic Fernandes’ curling free-kick from the right.
Churchill quickly regrouped after conceding a goal and marched many time on the rivals but Calangute defender led by Amar along with Mayur Shelar, Bersal Viegas and Bonny Niasso stood tall to clear every danger until the full-time whistle to conclude their season with a win.
