The Real Madrid youth academy product already had prior English football experience before coming to London, having played for Bolton from 2010-2013. Regarding the extension, Alonso said, “I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world. It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”
The defender has scored 15 goals in 92 appearances in all competitions for Roman Abramovich’s side, and has begun to receive international call-ups from this year onwards.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said, “We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract. In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude.”
This season too, Alonso has been on fine form, playing a key role in Maurizio Sarri’s plans for the club. In total, he has made 14 appearances this season, scoring one goal, and assisting two.
