Five nations with the most participants at Australian Open 2023

These countries are the powerhouse of Tennis in the modern era.

The Australian Open 2023 is off to a great start with top-seeded players progressing to the next round without any major upsets on the opening day. Many top players have withdrawn from the mega event with World’s number one ranked singles Carlos Alcarez, Australian favourite Nick Krygios and a few others bowing out due to injuries. 

The USA has been the powerhouse of tennis and has been producing young talents consistently. The country has the highest number of participants (men and women combined) at the Australian Open 2023. In this article let us discuss the top five nations with the most participants at the Australian Open.

5. United Kingdom - 24

United Kingdon (England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Wales) has the fifth-highest participation at the Australian Open 2023. Draper, a young emerging player played his heart out against number one seed Rafael Nadal losing in four sets even after getting injured. The pair of Joe Salisbury and Rajiv Ram are the favourites to win the men’s doubles with the pair recently winning the ATP Finals in Turin.

Cameron Norrie is the highest-seeded player who recently defeated Rafael Nadal at the United Cup in three sets. 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu won the first round and is set to take on world number 7 Coco Gauff from the USA in the next round.

4. Italy - 29

Italy has the fourth-most participation at the Australian Open 2023. In the singles section, Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner are the highest-seeded 13th and 15th respectively. Jannik Sinner had a great 2022 season reaching the quarterfinals (Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships, and US Open) but couldn't progress to the next rounds. 

In the doubles section, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolleli are seeded ninth with the former playing in the singles section as well. 35-year-old Fognini was once ninth in the singles and shall look to put up a good fight.

3. France - 39

France has the third-highest participation but none of its players is in the top 15 (in both singles and doubles). 36-year-old Gael Monfils bowed out of the competition two weeks before the start and the onus will be on the doubles section to perform. The participation list is the addition of the qualifying draw and the main draw participants. 

2. Australia - 47

The hosts are among the top two in the participation list with many players getting wildcards in both the main draw and qualifying draws. Nick Krygios the crowd favourite bowed out of the competition after getting injured on the opening day. The star player defeated Novak Djokovic two days earlier during an exhibition event two days prior to the start of the grand slam.

John Millman defeated Huelser from Switzerland who is ranked 100 places higher than the former. Also, Alex de Minaur will be the highest-ranked singles player in the absence of Krygios. 38-year-old Samantha Stosur is set to retire after playing the Australian Open. 

1. USA - 65

As expected the United States of America has the highest number of participants (65). USA shots a large number of tournaments throughout the season with players getting good exposure and experience without having to travel out. Also, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will be one of the favourites to win the men’s doubles along with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the women’s doubles.

Coco Gauff will be playing in both the singles and doubles and will look to win at least one title in either section. Venus Williams got injured before the tournament else she would also have participated.
