Six most memorable moments of ATP Season 2025

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominated the season, sharing all four Grand Slam titles between them.

As with 2024, the ATP season 2025 began on a fairly predictable note. In 2025, the young guns and the old guard jostled for space, with the new generation taking the lead following the season-long tug of war.

Dominant duo, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner basked in the limelight, sharing the four majors between them. A host of players broke through with significant but overdue victories, with the talented Jack Draper and Casper Ruud scoring big wins.

Monagesque player Valentin Vacherot and Czech Jakub Mensik were also among those who basked in the glory with breakthrough runs in 2025. Brazilian Joao Fonseca joined the winner’s circle as one of the youngest title holders on the men’s tour.

Tour veterans Gael Monfils and Novak Djokovic added to their title tally, albeit on a smaller stage. By registering wins in the season, they became some of the oldest men to lift the winner’s trophy in the ATP Tour.

The 2025 season was a perfect encapsulation of the surprises the ATP can offer, as it shifted gears from being a typical year to an unexpected one when viewed in the light of 2024. Here are six of the most unforgettable moments of the 2025 ATP season.

Casper Ruud claims maiden Masters 1000 title in Madrid

Casper Ruud delivered in his second title round of the season after  Dallas, where he lost to Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. The 26-year-old Ruud won the biggest event of his career when he claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title in Madrid.

Ruud did not drop a set en route to the Madrid Open final. Aiming for his first ATP 1000 title, he outlasted Draper, the Indian Wells champion, in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Not only did Ruud become a Masters 1000 champion for the very first time, but he also became the first Norwegian to achieve the feat. The welcome victory also returned Ruud to the ATP Top 10.

Novak Djokovic 100th tour-level title in Geneva

It was August 2024 when Novak Djokovic last secured a noteworthy result, winning gold at the Paris Olympics.  When he accepted a wildcard for the Geneva Open, he was in the midst of nearly a year-long title drought. The Serb was playing in Geneva for the second time.

Novak Djokovic secured the elusive 100th tour-level milestone win when he rallied to defeat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz for a closely fought 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-6(2) victory at the clay-court event.

The former World No. 1 joined Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) in having won a minimum of 100 ATP Titles.

The Serb further narrowed the gap to Connors and Federer when he won the inaugural Hellenic Championships in Athens. Djokovic (38 years, 5 months), when he won the title in Athens, surpassed Gael Monfils (38 years, 4 months) as the oldest ATP champion. Monfils achieved this milestone when he won the Auckland Open in January.

Carlos Alcaraz defended his 2024 French Open crown

Carlos Alcaraz had one goal in Paris: to emulate countryman Rafael Nadal by defending his 2024 French Open title. In the championship round, Alcaraz ran into familiar foe Jannik Sinner, whom he had defeated in the finals of the Rome Masters three weeks ago.

The Spaniard delivered the result he was looking for in a five and a half hour marathon encounter, the longest Roland Garros final in the Open Era. Alcaraz scripted a comeback from the brink, two sets down and facing three match points in the fourth set.

The scoreline at the end – 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2), which gave Alcaraz a 5-0 record in Grand Slam finals and the Coupe des Mousquetaires for a second time.

Jannik Sinner lifts his maiden Wimbledon trophy

A month after his heartbreaking loss in the Roland Garros finals, Jannik Sinner was back and competing for the Wimbledon title. In his 100th Grand Slam match and with the trophy at stake, Sinner found himself facing Carlos Alcaraz for the third time in the 2025 season.

Sinner was looking to settle the score for his French Open defeat. He was a set down before he rallied to win his second Grand Slam title of the season, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. By securing his maiden SW19 title, Sinner not only snapped Alcaraz’s winning streak in Grand Slam finals, but he also became the first Italian to win Wimbledon.

Valentin Vacherot’s title run at the Shanghai Masters

The championship round of the 2025 Shanghai Masters was a family affair as Valentin Vacherot took on his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech, in his maiden tour-level final.

Vacherot, unseeded and ranked World No. 204, got the better of his cousin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 for his first ATP-level title. The then 26-year-old Vacherot became the lowest-ranked tournament winner in ATP Masters 1000 history after the improbable victory.

Vacherot defeated four-time winner Novak Djokovic en route to becoming the first player representing Monaco to win an ATP-level event.

Joao Fonseca’s victory at Basel

Joao Fonseca joined a long list of teenagers to win their debut tour-level title when he defeated Argentine Francisco Cerundolo in Buenos Aires in February as an 18-year-old. The Brazilian, with his powerful forehand, forced Cerundolo into submission in straight sets.

Eight months later, the Brazilian teenager won the biggest title of his career – the ATP 500 event in Basel, Switzerland. Fonseca defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-3, 6-4, for the biggest title of his career and the second of the season.

The Rio native also became the first Brazilian to win the Swiss Indoors Basel and finish his year in the ATP Top 30 at World No. 24.
