These players have ruled the sport over the years.

ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) was formed in September 1972 and the association from 1990 started the ATP tour events. The ATP tour includes the four Grand Slam Tournaments, the ATP finals, ATP 1000 tournaments, ATP 500 and 250 tournaments. Here is a look at the top 10 Tennis players with the most singles titles in the Open Era.

10. Lleyton Hewitt (30)

Lleyton Hewitt is the last Australian singles player to win a grand slam (2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon Championships). The Australian legend became the youngest to achieve the number-one spot in singles and the record was recently broken by the Spanish current world number Carlos Alcarez. The second half of his career was affected due to several injuries ultimately retiring in 2016 after playing for two decades.

9. Andy Roddick (32)

Andy Roddick from America reached the finals of (the 2004,2005,2009 Wimbledon Championships and the 2006 US Open) but lost all of them to Swiss legend Roger Federer. Roddick beat Carlos Ferrero to claim the 2003 US Open which was his only major grand slam win. The American had a good rivalry with Roger Federer but couldn’t prolong his career retiring in 2012 at the age of 30.

8. Michael Chang (34)

Michael Te-Pei Chang from the USA holds the record for being the youngest player to win a grand slam (1989 French Open) aged 17. He has a career win-loss record of 662-312 (combining all the events) with a win percentage of 68. Chang was part of the Davis Cup-winning team in 1990. After retiring from professional tennis the American went on to coach Kei Nishikori from Japan.

7. Thomas Muster (44)

Thomas Muster from Austria was considered the “king of clay” in his era and also held the world’s number-one rank for a brief period in singles. Muster became the first Austrian to win a grand slam title (1995 French Open) which was also his only major title. He is one of the nine players to win Super 9/ATP Masters Series/ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles on clay, hardcourt and carpet. Dominic Thiem became the second Austrian to win the grand slam title (2020 US Open).

6. Andy Murray (46)

Andy Murray is a British professional tennis player from Scotland and has won three grand slam titles and 46 ATP tour titles. Murray had a great 2012 season first reaching the finals of Wimbledon and then winning the gold medal at the London Olympics. What was more special is that Murray lost to Federer in the Wimbledon finals but defeated him in a span of four weeks.

5. Andre Agassi (60)

Andre Agassi from America is the second of five men to achieve the Calender Grand Slam (winning all four grand slam titles in one season) in the Open Era and the fifth of eight overall to make the achievement and is also the first of two men to achieve the career Golden Slam (career Grand Slam and Olympic gold medal). Agassi holds a career win-loss record of 870-274 with a win percentage of 76 and has won a total of eight grand slam titles.

4. Pete Sampras (64)

Pete Sampras has won 14 grand slam singles titles during his career, which was an all-time record at the time of his retirement and was eventually broken by the Swiss legend Roger Federer. The American started his professional career in 1988 and retired in 2003. At the fag end of his career he had a good rivalry with Roger Federer.

3. Rafael Nadal (92)

Rafael Nadal along with Novak Djokovic holds the second spot for winning the most ATP tour titles. The Spaniard’s win-loss record stands at 1068-219 (83 per cent). Rafael Nadal is known as the king of clay for having won 14 French Open titles. Overall Nadal apart from winning 14 French Open titles has also won five US Open titles, and two US Open and Australian Open titles.

2. Novak Djokovic (98)

Novak Djokovic has won a record 21 career grand slam titles and has also been ranked world number one for 373 weeks. The Serbian’s win-loss record stands at 1036-206 (83.4 per cent). The 36-year-old turned pro in 2003 and won his first grand slam title in 2008 (Australian Open). Novak Djokovic holds the record for winning the highest number of Australian Open titles (9). He picked up his 93rd Cincinnati Masters title in 2023.

1. Roger Federer (103)

The Swiss legend retired in 2022 after having won a record 1251 matches after having played for over two decades. Of the 19 major titles, Roger has won eight Wimbledon Championships the most in singles to date. The Swiss legend holds the record for winning 103 ATP titles (second most in Open Era). Federer wasn’t actively playing since the 2019 season, frequently suffering from injuries and played his last match at the Laver Cup 2022 playing alongside Nadal and Djokovic.
