Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Events to watch in second week of September
Bopanna will be representing India for the final time in Davis Cup.
A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. The World Wrestling Championships 2023 is scheduled to commence this week and will offer Paris Olympics quota places. Saurabh Chaudhary after a brief break is back into the Indian squad for the Shooting World Cup.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (September 11-17) in the Indian sports calendar.
Athletics
Ahead of the Asian Games, few top profile names including Amlan Borgohain, Kishore Kumar Jena, and men's 4x400m team are set to take part in the event. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Chandigarh for two days.
- September 10-11: Indian Grand Prix V
Badminton
After the completion of the China Open, BWF Hong Kong Open is scheduled for next week and will be the last BWF World Tour tournament in the Asian leg. The Indian shuttlers put in a sub-par performance last week with none of the players progressing to the 2nd round.
However, this time few top players have opted to stay out of the tour ahead of the preparations for Asian Games. Lakshya Sen will be the top Indian seed in the men's singles.
- September 12-17: Hong Kong Open
Basketball
The Indian basketball team progressed to the FIBA U-16 Asian Championships after claiming the top spot by defeating Sri Lanka in the SABA U-16 qualifiers. The young Cagers are grouped alongside Australia, Lebanon, and Sri Lanka. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup 2024.
- September 17-24: FIBA U-16 Asian Championships
Cricket
The group stages of the Asia Cup came to end with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh progressing to the Super Four stage. The teams will play each other once in the Super Four and the top two teams shall make it to the grand finale.

Football
Indian U-23 men's team started off their qualifying campaign with a loss to hosts China (1-2). With the withdrawal of Maldives, India is scheduled to play their last league stage game against UAE. The top sides from each group alongside four second best placed side reach the final tournament in Qatar.

Shooting
Tokyo Olympian Saurabh Chaudhary is back to play for India at the ISSF Pistol/Rifle World Cup. After missing out of a spot at the World Championships, the youngster will be eager to perform well and cement his place in the upcoming tournaments.

Tennis
The Davis Cup World Group 2 is set to take place in Lucknow, India on September 16 and 17. India is scheduled to take on Morocco and the winner progresses to the World Group Qualifying Stage I. Rohan Bopanna will be playing his final match for India after having represented the country for more than a decade.

Wrestling
The World Wrestling Championships is set to offer Olympic quota places for players finishing on the podium. Antim Panghal and Aman Sherawat will be India's best bet at the prestigious meet after several top profile names - Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya - pulled out.
