The men’s and the women’s team secured quotas based on the World Archery rankings.
India clinched men’s and women’s team quotas in archery for the Paris Olympics 2024, based on the updated World Archery rankings, released on Monday.
By virtue of this, India will now be represented in all five medal events, namely the men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, women’s team and mixed team categories.
This also means that the individual quotas won by Dhiraj Bommadevara (at the Asian Continental Qualifier Tournament 2023 in Bangkok) and Bhajan Kaur (at the final Olympic Qualifier held recently in Antalya) will now be reassigned to nations which do not have a single quota.
The Indian men’s team is ranked second in the world, while the women’s team is ranked eight, according to the latest charts. This means that both the teams are ranked first among the teams who could not secure quotas in the prescribed Olympic qualifying tournaments. According to this list, China and Indonesia pocketed the second quota in the men’s and women’s team events respectively.
India had failed to pick up quotas in both categories at the final Olympic Qualifier held in Antalya recently. While the men’s trio of Dhiraj, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav went down fighting against Mexico in the quarterfinals, the women’s team comprising Bhajan, Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat suffered a shock second round defeat against Ukraine.
Twelve teams each will be competing in the men’s and women’s team categories. Hosts France have been awarded quotas in each event. The Olympic Qualification comprised three legs.
The World Championships 2023 in Berlin presented the first opportunity, with South Korea, Turkey and Japan clinching quotas in the men’s event and Germany and Mexico securing spots in the women’s event. Both the Indian teams suffered losses in the quarterfinals.
The second leg saw teams sealing berths in continental qualifiers. The Asian Archery Championships 2023 saw Kazakhstan and South Korea clinching quota places in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. The Indian men’s team exited in the quarterfinals, while the women’s team managed to enter the semifinals.
The Pan American Archery Championships 2024 in Medellin saw the Colombian men’s team and the USA women’s team securing Olympic berths, while the European Archery Championships 2024 in Essen saw the Italian men’s team and the Dutch women’s team pocketing the available quotas.
The Final Olympic Qualifiers in Antalya this month saw Mexico, Chinese Taipei and Great Britain in the men’s event, and China, Malaysia, Great Britain and Chinese Taipei in the women’s event, booking their tickets to Paris.

India’s archery contingent for Paris Olympics 2024
It has been announced that there will be no trials for the selections of the teams. This means that the archers who competed in Antalya, will be competing in Paris too.
Men: Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav
Women: Bhajan Kaur, Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat
Deepika will be competing in her fourth straight Olympics. Tarundeep too will be aiming a mark in his fourth Games, having debuted at Athens 2004. Pravin will be making his second consecutive Olympic appearance, while Dhiraj, Ankita and Bhajan will be debuting at Paris.
India has never won an Olympic medal in archery. The six archers onboard to Paris will be aiming to change that.
