The sport of pro wrestling has a variety of matches that take place inside the squared circle.

Pro Wrestling has been around for many years in the sports entertainment industry with various top promotions like WWE and AEW. The thing that makes the sport interesting is the captivating in-ring action between some of the biggest and most talented competitors who train for years to entertain the audience with their bodies.

Another interesting aspect of pro wrestling is the variety of matches that take place in the ring. From singles bouts to multi-man matches, here are the different types and popular wrestling matches and the rules that govern the action inside the squared circle:

1. Singles match

A singles match takes place between two wrestlers in the ring. The match only allows traditional wrestling moves with multiple ways to score the victory. A pinfall would mean pinning the opponent’s shoulders to the mat, while a submission win is scored by submitting the opponent with a submission move.

On the other hand, a count-out win happens when the opponent stays outside the ring for a count of ten. Finally, in non-stipulation matches, the use of underhanded moves like hair-pulling, eye-gouging or low blows or use of foreign objects leads to disqualification and gives the other person the win.

2. Tag team match

A tag team match is contested between a minimum of two teams with two members each; However, there can be more in the case of multi-man tag team matches. In a normal tag match, one member of the team is on the ring apron while the other one competes inside.

At any given moment, he can tag his partner on the apron, and he would then become the legal man to compete, and only he would be allowed to score the win in the aforementioned ways. In case of a tornado tag match, all members of the team compete at the same time, and any of them are eligible to pin or submit their opponent for the win.

3. Triple threat match

A triple-threat match is contested between three in-ring competitors at the same time. In this match, there are no disqualifications or count-outs, which means the use of foreign objects and outside interference is permitted. The only way to win a triple threat match is by pinfall or submission, which a wrestler can do against either of his opponents.

4. Fatal 4-Way

A Fatal 4-way match is very much similar to a triple-threat match. The only difference in this match is that instead of three, four wrestlers compete against each other at the same time.

5. Cage match

A standard cage match involved the wrestling ring surrounded by a steel cage structure on all four sides with an open top. Along with pinfall or submission, the other two ways to win the match are either by escaping the cage through the door or by climbing out of it with both feet hitting the floor.

WWE has another variation of a cage match called Hell in a Cell, with the rooftop closed and the cage being higher than the one used in a standard match. However, the only way to win in this match is by pinfall or submission with no disqualifications or count-outs.

6. No DQ match

As the name suggests, a No Disqualification match means that the use of non-permitted moves and foreign objects like steel chairs, tables, ladders or kendo sticks are completely legal. This stipulation is usually imposed in standard singles or tag team matches, with pinfall and submission being the only two ways to emerge as the victor.

7. Last Man Standing match

A last-man-standing match is one of the gruesome matches in pro wrestling. There are no rules in this match, with both opponents having complete freedom to impose as much physical pain as they can on each other. The winner of the match is declared when the other wrestler is down on the ground and unable to answer the referee’s count of ten.

8. I Quit match

An I Quit match is also an in-ring showdown with all rules out of the window, and the winner can be crowned in any part of the arena. There is only one way to win this match. A wrestler is supposed to inflict maximum damage on his opponent, and he is forced to utter embarrassing words in front of the crowd, “I Quit.”

9. Tables match

A tables match is usually the sight of the ringside being surrounded by numerous wooden tables. To emerge victorious in the bout, a wrestler has to put their opponent through the table. Only once the table is broken is the wrestler declared the winner. This match can happen between two wrestlers or multiple teams as well.

10. Ladder match

A ladder match is usually contested for something prestigious, like a championship or contract that could be beneficial for the wrestler. Much like many stipulation matches, there are no rules in this match that permit the wrestler to do anything.

The prize for the match is hung above the centre of the ring, and the first wrestler to climb the ladder and retrieve it becomes the winner of the ladder match. The match usually takes place as a multi-man match, however, it has seen one-on-one bouts as well.
