Welcome to Khel Now's live blog for the Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev match in men's singles final of US Open 2023.
The former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is set to square off against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles final at US Open 2023. This is set to be a rematch of the U.S. Open final 2021 between Medvedev and Djokovic rather than the epic Alcaraz-Djokovic which many were eagerly awaiting.
The Serbian has had a smooth sailing throughout the tournament apart from the second round encounter against his countrymate Laslo Djere where the match progressed to five sets. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev too has enjoyed good success and upset the World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in four games quite comfortably to progress for the final of US Open.
Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev preview
The popular plans to watch Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic continue as their growing generational rivalry was thrown off by 27-year-old Medvedev’s stunning victory over the reigning champion and 20-year-old tennis wonderkind. Third-seeded Medvedev, who also won the US Open in 2021, upset Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, the top-seed, 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.
On the other hand, Djokovic, the second seed and three-time US Open champion, overcame local favourite Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(4) to advance to his 10th Flushing Meadows final with a dramatic celebration where he hung up the call on his opponent.
Head-to-head records
Novak Djokovic has a 9-5 advantage over his opponent in their 14 head-to-head meetings. However, their last encounter was won by the Russian. In the semifinals of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships, Medvedev prevailed over Djokovic in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Prediction
Medvedev’s convincing victory over Alcaraz, who was a heavy favourite to defend his title since Roger Federer, silenced the haters and the doubters. He is one of the only players on the tour who can truly get the best out of Djokovic, and he exudes confidence in his favourite Grand Slam at his preferred surface.
Along with winning the challenging match against Alcaraz, Medvedev showed with great serving, practically impenetrable defence and deep and angled returns that he does not need to alter his playing style to compete against the best players in the world.
On the other hand, the 36-year-old Djokovic, who has won two of the three Slams this season, has appeared to have something to prove in every game at this event. He won both the Australian and French Open championships and had advanced to the Wimbledon final before losing to Alcaraz.
Throughout the competition, Djokovic has performed admirably and starts as the favourite against anyone. However, the Russian has warned everyone to not doubt him on the hard court and if he plays at the same level he did against the Spanish youngster, he might be trouble to the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic will compete for a record-extending 24th Major and his fourth US Open championship on September 10th.
