The Serbian equaled Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam wins.
In a stunning display of sportsmanship and a heartfelt tribute, Novak Djokovic captured his 24th major title at the US Open 2023 and dedicated his remarkable victory to the late Kobe Bryant, the legendary Los Angeles Lakers Basketball icon.
Djokovic, known for his iconic celebratory attire wore a special t-shirt for this occasion bearing the poignant inscription "Mamba Forever." The front of the shirt featured a touching image of Djokovic and Kobe Bryant while the back showcased Bryant's iconic No. 24. It was a gesture that spoke volumes about the depth of their friendship and Djokovic's admiration for the basketball legend.
This act of remembrance wasn't the first time Djokovic had used his attire to pay homage to sports icons. Earlier this year, after securing his 23rd major title at the French Open 2023, Djokovic donned a jacket adorned with the No. 23, a nod to his breaking of Rafael Nadal's record at the Major's. The Serbian revealed that the idea for the Kobe tribute came to him about a week before the US Open final as he contemplated how best to honor his dear friend.
Kobe Bryant, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in 2020 along with his daughter Gianna and seven others was not just an idol but a mentor and confidant to Djokovic. The World No. 2 tennis sensation spoke candidly about how Kobe's wisdom and unwavering support played a pivotal role in his career especially during challenging times when he was recovering from injuries and striving to return to the pinnacle of the tennis world.
"He was always there for any kind of counsel, advice, any kind of support in the most friendly way," Djokovic shared. The loss of Kobe and his daughter profoundly affected Djokovic which prompted him to honor the basketball legend in a meaningful way. The choice of the No. 24 jersey that was worn by Kobe during Lakers career held immense symbolic significance.
Djokovic's tribute was the prelude to his exceptional victory at the US Open securing his fourth title at this prestigious event. His straight-sets triumph over Daniil Medvedev demonstrated his continued dominance in the world of tennis. As Djokovic basks in the glory of his 24th major title, he sets his sights on reclaiming the coveted World No. 1 ranking from Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.
