Top 10 active tallest tennis players in the world on the ATP Tour ft. Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev & more

Daniil Medvedev is one of the tallest Grand Slam winners.

The tennis circuit may resemble the roster of a basketball team in recent years, but tall players do not quite rule the roost. While taller players may, by default, possess a big serve and longer reach, players of average height are quicker on their feet and able to effect a quick change of direction – handy in a sport where agility matters.

When Diego Schwartzman took on Gael Monfils in the 2024 US Open first round, it was a David vs Goliath meeting. Schwartzman, at 5’7″ (170cm), was dwarfed by Monfils, who stood at a height of 6’4″ (193cm). Yet the Argentine led in their head-to-head until their last career match, now even at 3-3.

While four of the top ten players on the ATP Tour are over 195 cm tall, the most successful players range in height from 6’0″ (183 cm) to 6’3″ (191 cm). Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray all fall within this bracket, leading one to believe this is the ideal sweet spot that allows for a great serve and great movement.

Looking at the WTA Tour, while tall players like Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, standing at 6′ 0″ (183 cm), have met with success, it is the (relatively) pocket-sized dynamo Iga Swiatek at 5’9″ (176 cm), most successful among the women.

Coco Gauff, who stands 5’9″ (176 cm), prevented Sabalenka from winning her first US Open title last year, and also holds a 4–3 lead in their head-to-head record.

The average height among the top ten points to the same conclusion. As of February 2024, the average height of the top ten male players is 6’3″ (191 cm), and the average height of the top ten female players is 5’8″ (176 cm). The shortest woman in the top ten that month was Tunisian Ons Jabeur at 5′ 6″ (167 cm).

So let’s take a look at the top 10 active tallest tennis players on the ATP Tour.

Active tallest tennis players-

10. Jack Draper – 6’4” (193 cm)

Jack Draper is possibly the most exciting British prospect since the heady days of Andy Murray. The 22-year-old southpaw from Sutton made the tennis world sit up and take notice when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s Club shortly before the Spaniard completed the elusive Channel Slam.

That second-round loss denied Alcaraz a chance to become a two-time winner at the Cinch Championships. A week before dashing the Spaniard’s hopes in London, the World No. 25 won his maiden tour-level title, the ATP 250 event at Stuttgart.

At Montreal’s National Bank Open, the up-and-coming Draper teamed up with Jannik Sinner to reach the quarter-finals of the doubles draw.

9. Alexei Popyrin –  6’5″ (196 cm)

The 25-year-old Alexei Popyrin stands five inches taller than the top-ranked Australian, Alex de Minaur, who is six feet tall. While the  6’5″ Popyrin has just made the top 40  for the first time at the beginning of the 2024 season, his more illustrious peer was a week away from breaking into the top ten.

In August, Popyrin won the biggest title of his career – the Montreal Masters in his maiden ATP 1000 final. By claiming the 2024 Canadian Open trophy, Popyrin joined Pat Rafter, Mark Philippoussis, and Lleyton Hewitt in having won a singles ATP Masters 1000 title. The Australian is now knocking on the doors of the top 20 after reaching an all-time career-high of No. 23 after his title run in Montreal.

The resurgent Australian went past three top 10 players – Grigor Dimitrov, Hubert Hurkacz, and Andrey Rublev for his first title of the season.

8. Taylor Fritz – 6’5″ (196 cm)

Taylor Fritz headlines the American presence in the ATP Top 20. At World No. 12, the 26-year-old is the top-ranked American. His breakthrough came in the 2022 season when he won three titles – the Indian Wells Masters, followed by wins at Eastbourne and Tokyo.

Fritz created history in 2024 when he became the first three-time champion at Eastbourne, following wins in 2019 and 2022. It was a straightforward victory over Australian Max Purcell, and he got there without dropping a set.

The American has four wins against the top ten in the season. He also picked up the Delray Beach Open trophy for the second year in a row to go with his Rothesay International triumph. At Delray Beach, Fritz got the better of fellow American Tommy Paul in straight sets.

7. Hubert Hurkacz – 6′ 5″ (196 cm)

The mild-mannered Pole, Hubert Hurkacz, is closing on 700 aces in the ongoing season. His haul of aces currently stands at 669. He is also third on the serve leaderboard behind Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev when considering the last 52 weeks.

The Pole, with a World No. 7 ranking, has a modest collection of eight ATP titles and three final appearances. The 2021 season fetched him the ATP Masters 1000 Miami title, his first big win. It was among his three titles that season, marking his best year on tour. Hurkacz won tour-level events at Delray Beach and Metz that year. He also won the Shanghai Masters last season against Alexander Rublev.

Hurkacz won his sole 2024 title in Estoril in April and did not make another final until Halle in June. He made an injury-related withdrawal from Wimbledon after hurting his right in the second round against Arthur Fils. That incident also meant he could not play at the Paris Olympics.

His fitness struggles continued in Cincinnati, where he had to withdraw from his quarter-final against France Tiafoe after losing the opening set.

6. Alexander Zverev – 6′ 6″ (198 cm)

Another player who is as tall as Medvedev but has failed to make meaningful use of his height advantage is Alexander Zverev. Despite leading the field with 52 match wins in 2024, the German squeezed out only one tournament win and two final appearances this season. He won the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome and made the finals at Hamburg and Roland Garros.

The big-serve German failed to capitalise on his maiden French Open title round appearance after three consecutive semi-finals, losing out on yet another opportunity to bag a Grand Slam trophy after a five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz. He previously reached the 2020 final in Flushing Meadows, losing an epic five-setter to Austrian Dominic Thiem.

Zverev’s most successful year on the ATP Tour was the 2021 season, which saw him pick up six titles. Among them were two Masters (Madrid, Cincinnati), an Olympic Singles Gold (Tokyo), and the year-ending Nitto ATP Finals.

5. Daniil Medvedev – 6′ 6″ (198 cm)

Daniil Medvedev, at 6’6, is one of the tallest players among the men in the ATP top ten. He is also the only male player on this list to have won a Grand Slam title, having won the US Open in 2021. The Russian won his first Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati in 2019. He went on to win five more ATP 1000 trophies, with all except one coming on hard courts.

The 2023 season was his most successful, with Medvedev winning five titles. He also came close to winning his second consecutive US Open and Grand Slam title, but came up short against Novak Djokovic in the final.

The ongoing 2024 season has been a letdown for the Russian. He has made only two finals and has yet to win a title. It also saw him tumble out of the top three for the first time since April 2023 to his current position of No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

4. Christopher Eubanks – 6’7” (201 cm)

Standing 6’7” tall, Christopher Eubanks is likely the tallest American in the ATP Tour after Reilly Opelka. He reached a career-high ranking of No. 29 in July 2023 but has since fallen out of the top 100 to No. 106. Eubanks ensured his first top-20 win of the season by defeating Alexander Bublik in Halle.

At the Winston-Salem Open two months later, Eubanks defeated three top 100 players, Adam Walton(96), Hugo Gaston (61), and Roman Safiullin (59), on the way to his third quarter-final of the year. He won his first ATP title at the Mallorca last season, defeating Adrian Mannarino at the ATP 250 grass-court event.

3. Gabriel Diallo – 6’8” (203 cm)

Gabriel Diallo, a 22-year-old hailing from Canada, earned his first big win when he defeated 21st-ranked Daniel Evans on home turf at the Canadian Open last season. He has two Challenger wins to his name – last year at the Peugeot Slovak Open and this year’s Chicago Men’s Challenger.

The young Canadian reached a career-high ranking of No. 129 in February 2024. He earned his very first main draw win at a Grand Slam against Spaniard Jaume Munar in August at the US Open. It will be a date the young man won’t forget.

2. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard – 6’8” (203 cm)

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard made an impression in 2024 when he won an ATP 250 event in his hometown of Lyon. On the way to his first tour-level title, he took out No. 19 Alexander Bublik and No. 29 Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the semi-finals and finals. The Frenchman punched above his weight, having entered the event at No. 117.

When the grass court season got underway, the towering Frenchman proved his versatility by taking out 14th-ranked Ben Shelton in the Queen’s Club Championships and 21st-ranked Seb Korda in the opening round of Wimbledon. After his fourth-round appearance at SW19, Perricard reached a career-high ranking of No. 44.

1. Reilly Opelka – 6’11” (211 cm)

Reilly Opelka is the tallest active player on the ATP Tour. The 6’11” Opelka is tied with retired Croatian Ivo Karlovic as the tallest tennis player in the world. The American made his top 100 debut in 2018, followed by the top 50 debut a year later.

Opelka won two titles in 2022, winning ATP 250 events in Dallas and Houston. It was after his title round appearance in the subsequent event at Delray Beach that he cracked the Top 20.

Following a two-year hiatus after his August 2022 loss in Washington to Nick Kyrgios, he turned up to play in Newport. He reached the last four at the ATP 250 event but lost to compatriot, 20-year-old Alex Michelsen. Opelka defeated Adrian Mannarino before he clashed with Michelsen.

Who is the active tallest tennis player on the ATP Tour?

Reilly Opelka is the tallest active player on the ATP Tour. His height is 6 feet 11 inches.

Why is height important in tennis?

In tennis, height can be advantageous, as players have an edge over the net, and longer strides help them reach the ball quicker than others.
