Alexander Zverev and Alexander Shevchenko will clash in the second round of the Rio Open 2025.

Alexander Zverev and Alexander Shevchenko are making their Rio Open debut in the ongoing season. It will also be their first ATP-level meeting at the clay court event. The World No. 2 German had to grind for his first win in Brazil against Yunchaokete Bu, taking 2 hours, and four minutes and for the 7-6(4), 6-4 win. Zverev squandered a 4-1 lead against the unseeded Chinese player.

The top-seeded Alexander Zverev’s 28 unforced errors gave Bu a fighting chance against the German. Winning the break of serve in the ninth game of the second set sealed the win for Zverev and a place in the second round. Zverev, the World No. 2 will face Alexander Shevchenko for the first time in his career.

Shevchenko, like Zverev, is making his debut in Rio de Janeiro. However, he had an easier day than the German, downing Brazilian wildcard Felipe Meligeni Alves in straight sets for the 6-4, 6-2 in 85 minutes. Shevchenko won his first career match against Alves to set up a second-round meeting with Zverev.

The Kazakh player scored six of ten aces and converted three of seven breakpoints against Alves in a dominant second set. This leaves Thiago Seyboth Wild as the last man standing from Brazil on Day 2 of the week-long event. Alexander Shevchenko finds himself back in the top 100 after the opening-round win.

Zverev will be eyeing a strong comeback after losing to Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals in Buenos Aires. The Australian Open 2025 finalist will look to make his presence in Rio count before the tour returns to the hard courts in Indian Wells and Miami in early March.

A possible Zverev-Cerundolo rematch is on the card in the semi-finals should the top seed find a way past Shevchenko. The Kazakh is in the second round for the first time in 2025 and will hope to advance into the quarter-finals for the first time since his home event in October last season.

Match Prediction

Alexander Zverev will look to make the most out of being the top seed in his South American debut. Winning the Rio Open 2025, where is the favourite, will help the German consolidate his position ahead of World No 3, Carlos Alcaraz, who is playing in Doha.

Shevchenko has yet to make a significant impact against top ten players and is unlikely to upset Zverev. The German is a strong contender on clay and can be expected to pull off a straight-forward victory against Shevchenko.

Result: Zverev wins in straight sets.
