Andrey Rublev meets two-time winner Alexander Zverev to open his Turin campaign.

The ATP Finals 2024 campaign for Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev will get underway on Monday. Zverev and Rubel are slated to play the day’s last singles match of the John Newcombe Group in the night session.

The German, winner here in 2018 and 2021, has the momentum in his favour as he enters the 2024 edition of the ATP Finals. Zverev has acquired two ATP Masters 1000 titles this year at Rome and Paris, marking his seventh at this level.

Zverev is making his seventh ATP Finals appearance and has eyes on the big prize. The Hamburg native has qualified for the season finale every year except for 2022. Along with Medvedev, he is the other champion in the fray and the only player with multiple titles at the venue since defending champion Novak Djokovic skipped the event.

Andrey Rublev, a familiar face in Turin, has negotiated a roller coaster season to set up a fifth consecutive appearance at the year-ending ATP Finals.

Rublev began this season with a win in Hong Kong in the opening week and made the Australian Open quarterfinals. The Russian, coming in at No. #9 in the world, went on to win the ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. Entering the event in the Spanish capital with four straight losses, Rublev ousted Alcaraz on home turf in the last eight en route to the second ATP 1000 title of his career.

Preview

Alexander Zverev is in Turin with a tour-leading 66 match wins to his name and has been in a tussle with Carlos Alcaraz for the World No. #2 spot in recent weeks. He reclaimed the No. #2 spot before arriving in Turin and after his win at the ATP 1000 Masters in Paris after losing it to the Spaniard in October.

The 27-year-old has faced Rublev nine times on the ATP Tour and lead the head-to-head record at 6-3. Crucially, Zverev has an edge over Rublev in the events of significance—the Masters and Grand Slams. Zverev also defeated Rublev in their previous meeting at the 2023 ATP Finals.

The World No. #2 was the second to qualify for the season finale after Jannik Sinner and ahead of Carlos Alcaraz. Both Zverev and Alcaraz confirmed their spots in September.

Rublev made the shortlist a few short days before the ATP Finals draw was announced after defending champion Novak Djokovic confirmed his absence due to injury.

Match Prediction

After more than a handful of deep runs at Melbourne, Miami, Paris, and Halle, coupled with title runs at the Rome and Paris Masters, aided Zverev’s qualifying attempt for the season finale and the 2024 edition of the ATP Finals.

In contrast, Rublev was a last-minute qualifier, aided by the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic. Without the turn of events, Rublev would have been relegated to the status of alternate. It has been a season of oscillating fortunes for Rublev, even as he won his second Masters event in Madrid after Monte-Carlo last season.

On Monday evening, Zverev will kick off his ATP Finals 2024 campaign and the quest to become just the seventh in the tournament’s history to win at least three ATP Finals trophies. A third victory in Turin will help him join Boris Becker as the only other German with a trio of wins at the ATP Finals.

Zverev’s more fruitful run at the ATP Finals in comparison to Rublev, will come to the German’s aid as he looks to end the year on a high. The Russian has made it past the round-robin stage in just one of his last four appearances, losing to Ruud in the last four in 2022.

Result: Alexander Zverev to win in three sets.
