Rune won his first title since 2023.
Holger Rune ended Carlos Alcaraz’s incredible winning streak with a straight sets victory at the Barcelona Open 2025 final. The Danish youngster has been in excellent form this year, and suffered a heartbreak in the finals of Indian Wells.
However, he was on target against Alcaraz, dishing out winners for fun and making the Spaniard struggle for any rhythm. Alcaraz seemed physically unfit and took a medical timeout, but simply couldn’t comeback into the contest.
“It means the world, it was such a great match,” said the newly crowned Barcelona winner. “In the beginning, I was a little bit stressed, because Carlos obviously plays big-time tennis. I had to breathe a lot and find my rhythm. After he broke me, I got more into the match and played my tennis. The first set was a big battle; it was super important to win it and gain the momentum. I’m so proud of myself.”
After being forced to retire from his Monte Carlo opener due to food poisoning, Holger Rune made a swift and impressive comeback in Barcelona. The 21-year-old found his rhythm on clay, ousting defending champion Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals and capping his run with a commanding victory over Alcaraz to claim his third clay-court title.
