India’s Sumit Nagal has earned direct entry into the main draw at the 2024 Bastad Open, scheduled from July 15 to 21.
Last week, 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal announced that he will miss the 2024 Wimbledon Championships as he’s preparing for the Paris Olympics. The Spaniard also revealed that he will play at the Bastad Open before the 2024 Olympics.
Nadal will enter the event via wildcard (WR), and he’s also expected to play doubles alongside countryman Carlos Alcaraz. The World No. #2 will also play doubles with Nadal at the 2024 Olympics. Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud have also entered the main draw at the tournament as the top three seeds.
Nevertheless, Nagal has also earned direct entry at the ATP 250 tournament. The 26-year-old is currently ranked 71st in the ATP rankings, which is also his career best. In addition, he’s the joint fourth highest-ranked Indian in tennis history since the system was introduced in 1973.
Sumit Nagal won the Heilbronn Challenger earlier this month and reached the final in Perugia. The 26-year-old has played 10 matches in the last two weeks on the Challenger tour, winning nine. His only loss came against top-seed Italian tennis star Luciano Darderi in the final of the Perugia Challenger last week

Nagal will also make his main draw debut at Wimbledon next month. However, grass is not his preferred surface. Thus, the Indian tennis star might be aiming to break into the top 50 in the ATP rankings at the remaining clay tournaments. However, he is currently preparing to play at the grass-court Grand Slam.
At the 2024 Bastad Open, Nagal could potentially face the “King of Clay,” Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner or Casper Ruud.
