Carlos Alcaraz's projected path to Australian Open 2025 final
Carlos Alcaraz will aim to lift his maiden Australian Open title in 2025.
The 2024 year was a season of two halves for Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard won the Roland Garros and then successfully defended his Wimbledon title by defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final. However, things went from bad to worse for Alcaraz from then on as he lost the Paris Olympics gold to Djokovic, followed by a defeat to Sinner at the Six Kings Slam, and then lost at the Shanghai Masters.
The Spaniard will be hoping to find his best form ahead of the Australian Open 2025 as he looks to complete a maiden career Slam. Alcaraz has won all major Grand Slams barring the AO. He enters the competition seeded third and would be hoping for an improvement in the ATP Rankings, by the end of the marquee event.

With plenty at stake for the Spaniard in Melbourne, let’s explore his potential route to glory.
Carlos Alcaraz’s projected path to the final:
Round 1: Alexander Shevchenko
Alexander Shevchenko represented Kazakhstan at the United Cup and acted as a second fiddle to Elena Rybakina, helping the team reach the semis in their debut season. However, he struggled against 16th seed, Hubert Hurkacz and is currently seeded 72nd. With Alcaraz being vastly superior to his opponent, the Spaniard is expected to breeze through the first round.
Round 2: Yoshihito Nishioka or Qualifier
Yoshihito Nishika has played at the Brisbane International and Adelaide International this season. He suffered a second-round defeat in Brisbane before falling to Thanasi Kokkinakis in his opener in Adelaide. Considering the poor performance of the Japanese player, the Spaniard may also face a qualifier in this round. Either way, the 4-time Grand Slam winner is expected to emerge victorious.
Round 3: Jordan Thompson or Nuno Borges
Jordan Thompson is likely to be Alcaraz’s first-seeded opponent at the Australian Open 2025. The home-town boy had a disappointing outing at the Brisbane International, losing in the QF. Alcaraz had only faced Thompson once before, at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, which the Spaniard won in three sets.
Nuno Borges has been rapidly improving and a third-round result down under would be a great achievement for the Portuguese. If he succeeds, he will square off against Alcaraz who has faced and beaten him once at the Barcelona Open.

Round 4: Jack Draper
Jack Draper is set to return to professional tennis after the Paris Masters 2024. Though the British finished as the semi-finalist at the US Open 2022, Draper has skipped several matches in the build-up to the event, and should the match go into a five-setter, Draper’s fitness will certainly be tested. Alcaraz leads the head-to-head battle by 2-1 against Jack Draper.
Quarter-final: Novak Djokovic
A potential Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz contest is on the cards at the Australian Open. One of the best rivalries of the current era, this clash is between the master at the Rod Laver Arena and the talented Spaniard who has won all Slams barring the AO. The last time these two met was at the Paris Olympics, which the Serbian won, to gain a slender lead of 4-3 in the head-to-head battle.
Irrespective of the result, both players will give their 100% and are renowned for their never-say-die attitude. An enthralling spectacle awaits one and all in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025!
Semi-final: Alexander Zverev
Second seed Alexander Zverev could potentially advance to his 2nd straight Australian Open semi-final, setting up a rematch of the quarter-final match at the 2024 Australian Open. Alcaraz will be determined to avenge his loss while the German will be hoping to advance to his first-ever Australian Open final.
Despite being seeded lower, Alcaraz will favor his chances leading into this encounter, despite trailing the duo head-to-head by 5-6. Furthermore, the German player is going through fitness problems and United’s cup exit is hurting him.
Final: Jannik Sinner or Daniil Medvedev
Carlos Alcaraz will be desperate to step into Rod Laver Arena and complete his quest for his first career Slam. However, he will have his task cut out as Jannik Sinner could potentially be the final obstacle on his road to glory. Sinner vs Alcaraz is a rivalry that is still brewing and is here to stay for potentially the next decade.
The Italian is in the form of his life and is currently the top seed. The defending champion could be the favorite in the build-up to this nerve-wrecking clash but Alcaraz can’t be ruled out either. Additionally, the Spaniard will take confidence from the fact that he has beaten Sinner three times in 2024 and lost just once.
In a massive surprise, 2024 runner-up Daniil Medvedev could stun everyone and advance to the finals too. Known for upping the ante at crucial stages, the Russian can defeat anybody on his day despite a poor 2024. Medvedev though, struggled against Alcaraz last year, as the Russian last beat the Spaniard at the US Open in 2023 and has fallen 4 times since then.
