Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Hamad Medjedovic and braved the scorching Cincinnati heat to win 6-4, 6-4 in 95 minutes. The No. 2 seed recorded his 50th win of the season and remains on track for a sixth ATP Tour title of the year.

Following his victory over Medjedovic, he becomes the first man since Novak Djokovic (2013-16) to record over 50 tour-level wins for four seasons in a row.   

Alcaraz will face lucky loser Luca Nardi for a place in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Nardi gets to play Alcaraz for the second time this season after posting a win over Miami Open defending champion Jakub Mensik. The Italian was leading 6-2, 2-1 when Mensik pulled the plug 43 minutes into their third-round face-off. 

Interestingly, Medjedovic hit 25 winners to Alcaraz’s 15, but was done by his eight double faults and 38 unforced errors. Luca Nardi is making his debut run in Cincinnati, and he equaled his fourth-round appearance at Indian Wells in 2024, with his latest effort.

Preview

Alcaraz will return to Centre Court to take on Luca Nardi Wednesday, seeking his 51st win of the season and 14th consecutive win at the ATP 1000 level. The World No. 2 won Masters events in Monte-Carlo and Rome and is looking to pick up his third ATP 1000 title of the season at Cincinnati.

The 22-year-old shrugged off a rusty opening-round performance against Damir Dzumhur on Sunday to defeat the 22-year-old Serbian Hamad Medjedovic. In Nardi, he faces another 22-year-old as he bids to make the last eight.  

The winner of the Alcaraz-Nardi encounter will likely run into 2021 finalist Andrey Rublev in the last eight. Rublev, the No. 9 seed, clawed his way back a set down to overcome Australian Alexei Popyrin in three sets – 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5. The Russian will play Argentine Francisco Comesana in the round of 16.

Luca Nardi’s 2025 Cincinnati Open campaign received a new lease of life after a few last-minute withdrawals. This allowed Nardi to make a backdoor entry into the men’s singles main draw as a lucky loser. So far, he has turned it into a good opportunity to record his best result at the venue by making the fourth round. 

The Italian, who stunned the then World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells last year, will climb into the top 80 if he pulls off an upset win over Alcaraz. Nardi stretched the Spaniard to three sets in Doha earlier this year, which ended with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 for Alcaraz.

Judging by their face-off in Qatar, Nardi has shown he can keep pace with Alcaraz, particularly if the No. 2 seed makes another slow start as he did in his opening round against Damir Dzumhur.
