Carlos Alcaraz is third in the ATP live rankings with 7,120 points.
Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz defeated Frenchman Arthur Fils in a thrilling three-set clash to secure a spot in the last four at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters. After losing the first set, the four-time Grand Slam champion found a new lease of life and commenced a return.
Even in the decider, Alcaraz was 1-3 behind but eventually managed to seal the victory 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the semifinals, the Spanish tennis star will face countryman Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who took down 11th seed Ben Shelton and Indian Wells champion Jack Draper.
Fils troubled Alcaraz in all three sets. The Frenchman scored 23 winners and attempted 53 unforced errors, while Alcaraz had 18 winners and 41 errors. After the game, the Spaniard said, “I just wanted to stay strong… Waited for my chances. I felt in the first set he played well. Probably a few mistakes from my side.”
Securing a spot in the last four of the Monte Carlo Masters, the 21-year-old has joined an exclusive list of players who have played 10 or more Masters semifinals before turning 22. Only Rafael Nadal (18), Novak Djokovic (13), and Lleyton Hewitt (12) have reached more Masters semi-finals than Carlos Alcaraz.
However, once a world No. #1, the Spanish tennis star is struggling to keep up in the top two. Despite a three-month ban, Jannik Sinner is unbothered at the top spot in the ATP rankings with 9,930 points in the live rankings. However, Alexander Zverev’s second-round exit has opened a door to a rank boost for the 21-year-old.
Top-seed Zverev lost to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in three sets in the second round. Last year, he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Nevertheless, the German tennis star is second on the ATP live rankings with 7,595 points.
On the other side, the two-time Wimbledon champion has moved to 7,120 points with the quarter-final win over Arthur Fils. If he wins the upcoming semi-final against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Alcaraz will add another 250 points (making the total 7370).
Meanwhile, if he captured the title, he would move to the second position in the rankings with a total of 7,720 points. The 21-year-old had to withdraw from the last edition due to an injury.
