Rune and Tsitsipas are set for their first meeting since 2023.

Holger Rune defeated Ugo Humbert, the second Frenchman inside a week, to make the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Open 2025. Unseeded Corentin Moutet was Rune’s first-round conquest in straight sets. The 12th seed Dane secured the win in three sets, taking two hours and 35 minutes for the 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory. Rune handed Humbert his fourth straight defeat to maintain his superiority in their head-to-head.

With the latest setback, the 26-year-old Humbert has crashed out in the third round at Indian Wells in three consecutive editions. It was his second early exit since winning in Marseille and followed a second-round loss at the ATP 500 Dubai Open last month.

Rune, who has not held a trophy since winning in Munich in 2023, takes on No. 8 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. Tsitsipas is back in the top ten after claiming the ATP 500 title in Dubai and has yet to drop a set so far.

The Greek made short work of Thiago Seyboth Wild (6-2, 6-4) in the second round before ensuring a similar result with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Matteo Berrettini. Tsitsipas, whose last title came at the Monte-Carlo Masters last April, won his maiden ATP 500 title in Dubai over an in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Match Details:

  • Tournament: Indian Wells Open 2025 Men’s Singles
  • Round: Fourth round
  • Date: March 12
  • Venue: Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells, United States

Preview:

Since recording a three-set win over Botic van de Zandschulp in the ATP 250 event in Munich in 2023, Rune has just two finals to his credit. He has qualified for the 2023 Italian Open and 2024 Brisbane International titles. A deep run in 2025 is missing from the 21-year-old’s resume.

Holger Rune ended his participation at the Mexican Open early, retiring from his round of 16 match with a case of food poisoning.

The Dane faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in a daunting challenge shortly after the Greek returned to his winning ways. The 26-year-old Tsitsipas lifted his first ATP 500 title in Dubai after finishing as a runner-up 11 times in ATP 500 events.

On the line for Rune and Tsitsipas is a return to the last eight in Indian Wells. Rune reached the quarterfinals last year, while Tsitsipas was a quarter-finalist in 2021.

A spot in the semi-final would be within striking distance for the player he progressed. The potential last four opponents for Rune or Tsitsipas would be Tallon Griekspoor or Yosuke Watanuki, both unseeded players. A semi-final clash with fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev looms large.

Medvedev made the finals in Indian Wells for two years running in 2023 and 20024, only to be denied the trophy both times by Carlos Alcaraz.

While Rune has the edge in their head-to-head match (3-0), it is Tsitsipas who is riding a wave of good form.
