Novak Djokovic returns to action at Italian Open.
The Italian Open 2024 is the last clay court Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament of the season. The mixed-gender event has a 96-player pool in the singles draw and 32 players vying for the trophy in the doubles draw.
Former champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are to make an appearance. The two veterans – Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic together have a lion’s share of the titles at the Rome Masters. Nadal has lifted 10 trophies and Djokovic six at the event, which is now in its 81st edition. Djokovic is the oldest champion at the venue, having won the title in 2022 at age 34.
Unfortunately for the local fans, Jannik Sinner won’t be playing. The Italian sustained a hip injury in his Madrid Open quarter-final against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Also excluding themselves from the proceedings are Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray and Jiri Lehecka due to various injury-related troubles.
On the women’s side of the draw, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Pliskova have ruled themselves out of the Rome WTA 1000 event. Pegula’s presence on the tour has been erratic since missing the Middle Eastern swing in February because of a neck injury. The World No. 5 was absent in Madrid, and now, Rome.
Karolina Pliskova, the 2019 champion’s plans to play at the Foro Italico have been hampered by an ankle injury. Karolina Muchova and Jessica Pegula are among the top 15 in the WTA rankings missing from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
Elena Rybakina claimed the 2023 WTA 1000 Internazionali BNL d’Italia title and is the defending champion. Daniil Medvedev is the men’s singles defending champion in the ATP 1000 Masters draw.
Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski were the men’s doubles winners in Rome last season, while Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens won the women’s crown in 2023.
