The Dutch find themselves in uncharted territory with a first-ever title round appearance in the Davis Cup.

The Dutch and the Italians pulled off a coup in their respective semi-finals at the Davis Cup 2024 Finals, defeating Germany and Australia, respectively, in convincing fashion. Netherlands overcame Germany 2-0 to make their first final in the event’s 104-year history.

The Italians ended Australia’s hopes of making the final with a 2-0 win, becoming the first country since Czechia (2012-13) to make back-to-back Davis Cup finals.

Netherlands have the status of first-time finalists at the Davis Cup after crossing the semi-final hurdle. The Dutch took out Spain and Germany in the quarters and semis, two teams that share nine titles. Spain has six, and Germany owns three in the Davis Cup.

Botic Van De Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor stood up and delivered when it mattered most, powering the Dutch into their first-ever finals. Zandschulp and Griekspoor overcame Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff in hard-fought singles matches lasting three sets to whitewash Germany 2-0.

The Italians opened with a win when Matteo Berrettini took on Thanasi Kokkinakis to deliver a win across three hard-fought sets. Berrettini climbed back from the loss of the opening set tie-break to give Italy a 1-0 lead.

Jannik Sinner then completed the formalities against Alex de Minaur with straight sets win to go up 9-0 in his head-to-head against the Australian. Team Italy’s 2-0 win against the Australians came after surviving a scare against Argentina when Lorenzo Musetti lost the first match to Francisco Cerundolo.

Match Prediction

Italy extended their superiority over team Australia, beating them 2-0 in the second consecutive edition of the Davis Cup. In the 2023 season, the Italians ended Australian hopes of a title with a 2-0 win for their first Davis Cup trophy since 1976.

With Sinner at the helm, the Italians will go all out in their attempt to retain their Davis Cup trophy for only the third time in event history. Team Italy will be up against an inspired Netherlands, who vanquished Davis Cup heavyweights Spain in the quarterfinals and followed it up by a whitewash of three-time champions Germany in the last four.

World No. #1 Jannik Sinner has been the man to beat all season long, whose stellar form has accompanied him to Malaga as well. Sinner boasts positive head-to-head records against both the Dutch singles players – Botic Van De Zandschulp (2-0) and Tallon Griekspoor (5-0). Sinner, who recently won the ATP Finals in Turin, should have little trouble winning his allotted singles encounter

Should Italy falter in one of their singles matches, they may face an uphill battle in the doubles fixture. Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori could find Wesley Koolhof and Botic Van De Zandschulp a formidable obstacle should their paths cross. Bolelli and Vavassori were to play in the doubles against Australia in the semis if needed.

Result: Netherlands to take the win 2-1.
