With this, Jannik Sinner also becomes first Italian ever to lift the singles title at Wimbledon.

Jannik Sinner scripted history to become the new Wimbledon champion, and the first ever Italian to do so in singles. It was a fitting redemption for the World No. 1, as he thrashed two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.

It was his serving which powered him to his first ever Championship title. After leading 4-1 in the opening set, Alcaraz came storming back to clinch the first set. However extraordinary tennis followed, as the Italian broke the Spaniard’s serve instantly, and blasted aces one after the other to take the next two sets.

The match was still far from over, having witnessed Alcaraz’s heroics in Paris. However, the top seed was not messing around, as he gained an early break to go 2-1 up on serve. He continued to hold his games with perfection, but seemed to be in trouble at 30-30, serving at 4-3.

He held a game point but missed the first serve. However, the determination shined through, as he crunched a 110mph second serve to go within touching distance from glory.

While Alcaraz managed to hold on, Sinner did not let the pressure get to him next time, as he had three Championship points to put an end to Alcaraz’s streak against the Italian, and at Wimbledon.

He converted his second match point, and held his arms aloft, beaming with joy and staring at his team. Such was the emotional turnaround, from the lows at Roland Garros, to the highs in London. It was incredible scenes at Centre Court, as the 23-year-old’s parents, and family celebrated this memorable triumph.

For Alcaraz, it was a disappointing outing in the end. The Spaniard simply could not handle the top-class serving from his rival and was unable to deliver with his own serve on crunch points. There were uncharacteristic forehand errors, and Alcaraz simply did not have the luck he would have liked.

His unbeaten 5-0 winning streak in Grand Slam finals has now come to an end.
