Jannik Sinner is just two wins away from defending his US Open title.

Felix Auger Aliassime has booked passage into the US Open semi-finals for the first time since 2021. The Canadian advanced after breaking through the gritty defense of Alex de Minaur in four sets in their quarter-final face-off. It took 4 hours and 10 minutes for Aliassime to subdue the Australian with a 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5, 7-6(4) scoreline.

The Canadian forced De Minaur into a second-set tie-break after surrendering the opening set. Auger-Aliassime prevailed in the nearly 90-minute-long second set that included a lengthy fourth game. 

Auger-Aliassime, the No. 25 seed, moves to 3-1 in his head-to-head against De Minaur. It was also his 40th match win on the Grand Slam stage. The 25-year-old Canadian is up to No. 13 in the live rankings following his victory over the Australian. The deep run in New York has boosted the Canadian’s qualification chances for the year-ending ATP Finals.

The Canadian will now face defending champion Jannik Sinner in the last four for the second time in 2025, armed with a 2-1 head-to-head lead. The Australian was the second top ten player to fall prey to the Canadian after Alexander Zverev in the third round.

Sinner continued his 2025 US Open campaign by posting yet another clinical win against compatriot Lorenzo Musetti. The top seed was quick off the blocks against Musetti, taking just 26 minutes to claim the opening set.

Musetti put up some resistance in the second set, all traces of which evaporated by the third set. Sinner broke Musetti in the very first game of the third set and went ahead to wrap up the match, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in precisely two hours.

The 10th-seeded Musetti squandered three break-point opportunities in the second game of the third set and two more in game six. Sinner, the top seed, fired 10 aces and won 100% of his service games and advanced to his second straight semi-final at Flushing Meadows.

Sinner is due to play his fifth straight Grand Slam semi-final, a streak that got underway at the 2024 US Open. The result is an impressive 34-1 win-loss record at the majors since his Flushing Meadows title run in 2024, the only loss coming to Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 French Open.

Auger-Aliassime is the only North American left in the fray at the US Open after Taylor Fritz lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. He will look to make amends for his crushing loss to Sinner at Cincinnati earlier this year.

The 25-year-old Aliassime ended a two-year title drought with wins at Montpellier and Adelaide earlier this year. His last victory was in Basel in 2023, before delivering two tournament wins in the ongoing season. Aliassime is the only player outside of the ATP Top 10 to make it into the last four stage of the 2025 US Open.
