Novak Djokovic will take on Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open 2025 semi-final.
The tennis world is perhaps expecting a Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz final at US Open 2025. But Novak Djokovic, eyeing his 25th Grand Slam title, has a clear message for the young stars and their fans: he’s here to “mess up those plans.”
Before Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz can meet again in New York, Novak Djokovic has revealed his plan ahead of his semi-final meeting against the latter on Friday.
“We know they’re the two best players in the world right now. Everyone’s expecting them to be in the final,” Djokovic said after his quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz. “I’m going to try to mess up those plans,” he said in the post-match press conference.
The tennis world has been treated to a string of classic battles between Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz this season, including the title matches at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
But Djokovic, ever the disruptor, has different plans. The 38-year-old Serbian booked his place in the semi-finals with a hard-fought four-set victory over American Fritz on Tuesday night, winning 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in three hours and 27 minutes.
While Alcaraz stands between Djokovic and another Grand Slam final, Sinner must still get past Lorenzo Musetti in his quarter-final contest.
But if the Italian prevails, a rematch of his Wimbledon showdown with Alcaraz could be on the cards, should the Spaniard overcome Djokovic’s challenge.
He knows that the battle is going to be tough as it is no other but against one of ‘two best tennis players in the world’. But, “I definitely am not going with a white flag on the court. I don’t think anybody does really when they play them, but particularly not me,” he said.

Novak Djokovic also pointed out “Sinner still has to win a couple of matches to get to the final. But they are playing the best tennis of any players here. They have been the dominant force since the beginning of the tournament.”
Nevertheless, it would be unfair to take the Serbian legend lightly. He already knocked out Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarter-finals earlier this year.
Infact, Djokovic has reached the semi-finals at all four majors this year. He retired due to injury at the Australian Open against Alexander Zverev, then lost to Sinner at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Now, with a shot at his fifth US Open title and first Grand Slam since his 2023 title run in New York, Djokovic is just two wins away from history and possibly facing both Alcaraz and Sinner back-to-back to get there.
But the 38-year-old remains confident. “I’ve been the most consistent player at the Slams this season. That’s what I set out to do this year, to peak at the majors, and here we are again. I have another shot,” said Djokovic.
Djokovic leads his head-to-head record against Alcaraz 5-3, with the last meeting coming at the Australian Open where the Serbian won. He holds a perfect record against the Spanish sensation on hard courts, leading 3-0.
