Only four men have managed to defeat Novak Djokovic on all three surfaces.
A player is truly considered the GOAT when discussions arise about opponents who managed to defeat him on all three surfaces.
Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, is an all-time great in tennis history, boasting favourable records against every great player he encountered during his peak.
The Serbian is admired for his resilience, determination, and longevity. Here, we take a look at the rare pool of players who have managed to find success against Djokovic on all three courts: hard, grass, and clay.
Players to defeat Novak Djokovic on all three surfaces-
Rafael Nadal

Widely regarded as the “King of Clay,” Rafael Nadal was the first player to defeat Djokovic on all three surfaces. The Spaniard dominated everyone on clay, and Djokovic was no exception.
However, the Serbian proved to be the toughest amongst the lot for Nadal on his favourite surface, losing twice to Djokovic at Roland Garros (where Nadal holds a 112-4 record). Outside, clay, their contests were highly competitive as well.
They’re 2-2 on grass, but Djokovic leads comfortably on hard courts by 20-7. However, the duo etched their names in history for several blockbuster duels, with the 2012 Australian Open final being revered as one of the greatest Grand Slam matches ever.

Roger Federer

In one of the sport’s most incredible rivalries, Djokovic is the only man to have defeated Roger Federer, the most successful Wimbledon player, on multiple occasions. Roger Federer has lost to Djokovic three times in the SW19 title match, with the 2019 encounter being the most prestigious.
The Serbian leads the Swiss maestro on 20–18 hard surfaces, but they’re tied 4-4 on clay. Having started this matchup with four consecutive wins over Djokovic from 2006 to 2007.
Djokovic eventually finished the rivalry with a 27–23 lead, reflecting his dominance on grass over Federer, who played on grass for most of his career.
Andy Murray

Djokovic’s 4-match winning streak over Andy Murray came to an end at the 2008 Canadian Open. The Brit then destroyed the Serbian in consecutive finals, in Cincinnati and Miami, prevailing in straight sets.
His first grass-court win came at the semi-finals of the London 2012 Olympics, when Murray increased Djokovic’s wait for an Olympic medal.
His other notable victory was in the 2013 Wimbledon final, in which he became the first British player to win the Wimbledon trophy in the Open Era.
After a 10-year-long wait, Murray finally managed to get past Djokovic on clay, winning 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 Rome. The matchup eventually ended heavily one-sided, 25-11 in favor of the Serbian, but produced several iconic matches worth remembering.
Jannik Sinner

The current World No.1 Jannik Sinner is often called a younger version of Djokovic, a man he looked up to during his early days.
After winning the first three matches against the Serb, Sinner achieved his first breakthrough win over Djokovic in the year-end finals back in 2023.
However, the 2023 Davis Cup marked the beginning of Jannik Sinner’s dominance, as the Serbian lost remarkably, after having match points in the decider set.
Sinner then went on to win the Australian Open semifinals and the Shanghai final as well. After dominating Djokovic on hard courts, the top seed handed consecutive semi-final defeats to the 38-year-old in 2025, knocking him out of the Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, the current World No. 2, is the latest to join the elite list of players who have defeated Novak Djokovic on all three surfaces. The Spaniard had defeated the 24-time Grand Slam winner on clay at the Madrid Masters in 2022 and on grass at Wimbledon in 2023.
