The upcoming Taylor Fritz vs Ben Shelton clash is the first all-American semi-final since 1993 in Canada.

Ben Shelton has notched up win number 30 of the 2025 season by defeating Alex de Minaur for a 6-3, 6-4 win. The left-hander also rose to No. 7 in the Race to Turin after his maiden win over the 2023 Canadian Open finalist. De Minaur’s loss ended his seven-match winning streak.

Shelton crossed the finish line comfortably in 91 minutes, a contrasting win in comparison to his two back-to-back three-setters against Brandon Nakashima in the third round and Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round.

It will be the first Canadian Open semi-final involving two Americans since Todd Martin took on Richey Reneberg in 1993. 

Shelton, who served 11 aces, made the most of De Minaur’s uncharacteristic 28 unforced errors. The American struck 22 winners en route to setting up the semi-final clash against countryman Taylor Fritz. Should Shelton win the title, he will go past Novak Djokovic and improve his ranking to a career-high No. 6.

Fritz defeated World No. 11 and the 2024 Canadian Open finalist, Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 7-6(4) in their second straight Masters 1000 face-off. Their previous meeting took place at the Madrid Open semi-finals in 2024, which Rublev won in straight sets. 

The second seed was on match point at 5-4 in the second set, but a momentary lapse in focus allowed Rublev to force a tiebreak. Fritz, the World No. 4 from California, steadied the ship for his 20th hard-court victory of the season in 81 minutes.

The fourth-seeded Shelton can close the gap with Fritz in the ATP Rankings should he win Thursday’s final, threatening Fritz’s position as the top-ranked American. Fritz eased past Andrey Rublev to book passage into his first semi-final appearance in Toronto.

Meanwhile, Shelton moves to 25-1 after winning the first set in 2025. The victory over Washington Open champion Alex de Minaur in the last eight gave him his first top-ten victory of the season. 

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev, the winner of the 2017 edition, takes on Karen Khachanov in the other semi-final. There hasn’t been a two-time champion since Rafael Nadal in 2018-19, and the tradition continues after Zverev knocked out defending champion Alexei Popyrin in the quarter-finals.

The winner of the Shelton-Fritz semi-final advances to the title round of the ATP 1000 tournament for the first time. The 27-year-old Fritz is chasing his third title of the season after Stuttgart and Eastbourne and eleventh overall.
