Top five players who have withdrawn from ATP Vienna Open 2024
Several high-profile stars have skipped the Vienna Open 2024, including the defending champion.
The Vienna Open is a professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. Originally an event of the Grand Prix tennis circuit, it is currently part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour, held annually at the Wiener Stadthalle, in Vienna, Austria, since 1974.
The 50th edition of the tournament is scheduled to commence on October 21 and will run until October 27. Due to the event’s close proximity with the Basel Open, several high-profile names have withdrawn from the Vienna Open, including defending champion, Jannik Sinner.
Let’s take a look at the top five players to have announced their withdrawal from the ATP tournament.
Top players who will miss Vienna Open 2024
5. Daniil Medvedev
The swashbuckling Russian has had a tournament to forget at Saudi’s Six Kings Slam but one to remember considering its monetary benefits. Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by top seed Jannik Sinner at the prestigious exhibition event, marking his second consecutive loss to the Italian.
The World No. #5, who won the Vienna Open in 2022 and reached last year’s final, has opted out of the 2024 edition citing shoulder issues.
4. Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton’s had an interesting last few weeks since the US Open. After a third-round exit at the hands of fellow American Francis Tiafoe, Shelton bounced back by defeating fifth seed Daniil Medvedev at the Laver Cup. However, his performance at the Japan Open against Arthur Fils marked one of his most disappointing matches of 2024.
At the Shanghai Masters, the American faced a tough draw having to contend with the high-flying Sinner in the round of 16. Despite a tough fight, the Italian continued his merry ways, eventually winning the championship. The 22-year-old American has now withdrawn from Vienna Open 2024 for personal reasons.
3. Taylor Fritz
After a career-best outing at the 2024 US Open where he finished runner-up losing to Jannik Sinner in the finale, Taylor Fritz has been busy playing plenty of tennis across the globe including the Laver Cup, Japan Open and Shanghai Masters.
However, like many of the big names, the American too has entered the list of high-profile tennis players to miss out on the competition. Although reasons unknown, it is likely that Fritz will sit out of Vienna Open 2024 due to the challenging workload.
2. Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion of both the French Open and Wimbledon, has become another casualty of the lucrative prize money offered by the Six Kings Slam event. After a shocking QF loss to Tomas Machac at the Shanghai Masters, the Spaniard roared back in style advancing to the finals of the Six Kings Slam.
Alcaraz who skipped the 2023 edition of the Vienna Open, having made a surprisingly high demand of $800k as fee for competing in the tournament, will miss the ATP event this year as well due to heavy workload. The Spaniard’s rough past with the Vienna Open’s organisers puts a cloud on the four-time Grand Slam winner’s participation in the Vienna Open in future.

1. Jannik Sinner
The defending champion Jannik Sinner will be unable to defend his crown having opted out of Vienna Open 2024. Many knew this was coming given the Italian had only recently won the Shanghai Masters and competed at the Six Kings Slam, wherein he defeated nemesis Alcaraz to take home a big share of the prize money.
Sinner has had a dream run in 2024 having started the calendar year with a maiden Grand Slam title and has defeated 24-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic in each of their last four encounters.
