Jannik Sinner has won four ATP titles in 2024.

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner lauded compatriot Matteo Berrettini after the two faced each other in the second round at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.

Sinner recorded a resounding victory over countryman Berrettini in the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday. With the win, Jannik Sinner became only the third tennis player in the Open Era to win all 14 ATP matches against compatriots, after Bob Hewitt and Guillermo Vilas.

Meanwhile, Sinner’s opponent, Matteo Berrettini, hasn’t been less appealing on grass. Since the start of the 2020 season, the Italian has won the joint-most matches on grass (29, equal with Alexander Bublik). He also reached the final at the 2021 Wimbledon, where he lost against Novak Djokovic. Thus, after winning the match, Sinner stated that Berrettini was a good friend of his.

The World No. 1 revealed that they also practice together; however, it was unfortunate that they faced each other in the second round at Wimbledon. Sinner also affirmed that he was lucky to win three tiebreakers against Matteo Berrettini.

The 2024 Halle Open champion said, “First of all we are good friends. We play Davis Cup together. We practice together. It’s tough we had to face in Round 2. Today was a high-level match. We both played really well.

He later added, “In three tiebreaks I got sometimes a bit lucky. I’ll take it for today. Thank you everyone for the support. It’s been amazing. It’s quite late so thanks for staying. We have spoken with the team a lot and I knew I had to raise my level.”

Jannik Sinner concluded, “He played the final here and is a grass court specialist. I was looking forward to it, it was a challenge to come on court and I am happy with how I handled the situation. There were some ups and downs, which is normal in a five-set (match), but I am happy.”

In the next round, he will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. The Serbian tennis star has recorded wins over the likes of Tallon Griekspoor and Sumit Nagal in the two initial rounds. Sinner and Kecmanovic have faced each other three times on the ATP Tour and the Italian has won on all three occasions.
