Ranking the top 10 greatest tag teams in WWE history

WWE has witnessed a number of legendary tag teams over the years

WWE has witnessed some of the greatest wrestlers in the industry, who proved their individual skills and in-ring abilities. But when it comes to tag teams it is way more different, more than the individual abilities, the right chemistry and coordination with the tag partner matters the most. WWE has witnessed a number of tag teams over the years, where some remain greatest and some ultimately flopped. To honor the greatest, here we have ranked the top 10 greatest tag teams in WWE history.

10. The Hart Foundation

The Hart Foundation is a wrestling stable of the Hart Wrestling family members. The Hart family members used the name for generations and had featured generations of talents. Although there are multiple versions of the stable, the initial stable featuring Bret Hart and Neid Hart is considered as the greatest among them. The foundation was started in 1985 after Bret Hart gave up on the Cowboy gimmick by teaming up with his brother Neid Hart.

The Tag Team was first given a mid-card status for the first two years until winning the WWF Tag Team Championship for the first time. They evolved to be one of the great tag teams at the time during the 1997 when the foundation was re-formed with The British Bulldog and Brian Pillman. The stable attained its destiny, when they grabbed almost every championship of the company including the WWF Championship, Intercontinental Championship, European Championship and WWF Tag Team Championship. After Pillman's death and Bret Hart's Montreal Screwjob the stable moved to WCW.

9. The British Bulldogs

The British Bulldogs is a professional wrestling stable in WWE, featuring Davey Boy Smith and his cousin Dynamite Kid. It is one of the successful stables in the 1980’s with a tenure of four years in WWF. When Vince McMahon purchased the Stampede Wrestling, The British Bulldogs were also moved to WWF. Their feud with the Hart Foundation is one of the epic rivals at the time.

The British Bulldogs held the WWF Tag Team Titles once, and had multiple pursuits for the tag team championship only to deliver a hard fought loss mostly against The Dream Team and The Hart Foundation. The Tag Team Stable ended in 2000's as a result of Smith's death due to heart attack. The tag team was ranked 5th in the top 100 tag teams on the PWInsider list.

8. The Steiner Brothers

The Steiner Brothers is one of the popular wrestling tag teams during the late 1980's and 1990's. The stable features two brothers of the Steiner family, Rick and Scott Steiner. The duo appeared in wrestling promotions including ECW, WCW, NJPW, TNA and WWE. The Stiener Brothers made their debut in 1988 at WCW and moved into WWE in 1992.

The Stiener Brothers are known for their extraordinary physique and showcase of power. They had a long term feud with The Road Warriors, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, and The Outsiders. The Steiner Brothers won the WWF Tag Team Championship twice and WCW World Tag Team Championship seven times. They recently got inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the class of 2022.

7. The Road Warriors / Legion of Doom

The Road Warriors also known as the Legion of Doom is one of the popular tag teams in WWE during the 1990's and early 2000's. The team originated in 1980's in GCW and made their way into WWE in 1990 under the name Legion of Doom. The tag team features Road Warrior Hawk and Road Warrior Animal. They are easily recognized for their face paints, spiked armor and a great physique.

They had extended wrestling success in almost every wrestling promotion during the period and won the championships there. They are known for their feud with the Hart Foundation, New Age Outlaws and Stiener Brothers. They had also won the WWF Tag Team  Championship twice and got inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.

6. Edge and Christian

Edge and Christian are another Canadian Tag Team stable in the list with two world champions. They are considered as one of the revived tag teams during the Attitude Era. The team wrestled for various Independent Wrestling Promotions before joining WWE in 1998. Edge and Christian won the WWF Tag Team Championship seven times and each had also won the singles title simultaneously.

The team had a first run from 1998 to 2001 and second run from 2009 to 2011. The success of the tag team impacted their singles wrestling career as both became World Champion in WWE. Their stable was disbanded in 2011 due to Edge's legitimate neck injury, which kept him away for 9 years. WWE honored them with the title of the greatest tag team in WWE history in 2012.

5. New Age Outlaws

New Age Outlaws is a tag team featuring Billy Gunn and Road Dogg. It is one of the most popular tag teams of the Attitude Era and is the perfect example of how a tag team could save the careers of individuals. Before forming the tag team in 1997, both Billy Gunn and Road Dogg were struggling in their careers. The formation of the New Age Outlaws made a huge impact on the WWF’s Tag Team Division as they started attacking other tag teams. The tag team is well known for pulling out wins out of nowhere using cheap techniques and use of weapons. 

The duo is claimed to be the most popular duo of the attitude area, this impacted in the merchandise sales with the third most sold merchandise after Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. They aligned themselves with Triple H and Shawn Michaels during the second incarnation of D-Generation X. NWO had a great success in WWE with five WWF World Tag Team Championship and one WWE Tag Team Championship reign. They hold the record for longest duration between championship reigns of 14 years.

4. The New Day

The New Day is one of the most successful and entertaining Tag Team Trio of the current generation, featuring Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E. The tag team was formed in 2014 by Xavier Woods with Big E and Kofi Kingston and has become one of the most popular and decorated wrestling stables of the company. The trio had achieved great success in WWE, breaking numerous records, including the most SmackDown Championship reigns of seven, longest Raw Tag Team Championship reign of 483 days.

They have won a total of 12 tag team championships in the company, being the second team to achieve this milestone. All the three members of the stable were successful in their careers both as a team and individually. Kofi and Big E were also able to win the WWE Championship. The stable became more popular around the world, where they ruled the merchandise sales for years. It is undeniable that The New Day is the greatest modern day tag team in WWE.

3. Dudley Boyz

Team 3D or The Dudley Boyz stands second on the greatest tag team in WWE on our list, with a monumental wrestling career. Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley are the on-screen half-brothers, joined team with multiple Dudley family members including Stacy Kebleir, Spike Dudley and so on. The tag team was formed in ECW and moved to WWE in 1999. This is one of the most popular and successful tag teams in the wrestling industry, where their success was extended to other promotions including NWA, TNA, IWGP, ECW and so on.

They are the only tag teams in the wrestling industry to hold WWF, WWE, ECW, WCW, NWA, TNA, and IWGP Tag Team Championships. Dudleys are known for extreme hardcore wrestling and throwing the opponents over the tables, no matter male or female wrestler. Over the years, they have won eight WWF World Tag Team Championship, one WWE Tag Team Championship and one WCW Tag Team Championship. The most hardcore tag team in the world had been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the class of 2018 to recognize their accomplishments.

2. The Hardy Boyz

The Hardys also Known as Hardy Boys is the greatest WWE tag team of all time, consisting of real-life brothers Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy. The Hardys are known for their extreme highflying moves and highly risky moves. They made their WWE debut in 1998 and began as a jobbers, their highflying tactics gained the attention of fans and created a popular fanbase, which gave them the push to win their first WWF tag Team Championship the following year.

They had a notable rivalry with The Dudley Boyz, Edge & Christian, The Miz and John Morrison, MNM, The World’s Greatest Tag Team, Cade and Murdoch and so on. The Hardys also wrestled for other wrestling promotions including TNA, AEW and ROH. The Hardys had won WCW Tag Team Championship once, WWE Raw tag Team Championship once, WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship once, and WWF World Tag Team Championship six times in WWE. It is undeniable that The Hardy Boyz are the greatest Duo of all time.

1. The Usos

Jimmy and Jey Uso is yet another greatest tag team in the active WWE roster. The twins were from the legendary Samoan wrestling family and they are the sons of Rikishi. The Usos made their WWE debut in 2010 with their cousin Tamina as a heel stable attacking The Hart Dynasty. For the first three years, they were booked as rookies, without a championship push. In 2013, they were given the right push, which led to their first championship gold in the company as they won the WWE Tag Team Championship.

The Usos eventually gave tribute to their late uncle Umaga with a face paint and started highlighting their Samoan culture. The tag team was successful both as a face and heel and developed a fanbase for themselves. From 2016 the rise of Usos was rapid, and took the tag team division to a whole new level over years. The Usos hold the record of becoming the first tag team to headline WrestleMania and for the longest reign as tag team championship with 622 days.

They are the first tag team to unify Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships. The Usos had also won multiple awards for the best tag team of the year on multiple occasions, with the most recent award in 2022 by ESPN.
