The Undisputed Champion John Cena opens up on fan reactions, pivots, and why there’s no coming back once he walks away
John Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber 2025 rocked the WWE Universe, but the 48-year-old icon isn’t done shaking things up just yet.
With only six months left on his farewell run, the Undisputed WWE Champion sat down with Collider to discuss what fans can expect in the final stretch and made it clear that the audience will help dictate the road ahead.
Speaking to Steve Weintraub, Cena confirmed that WWE’s fluid storytelling approach allows them to pivot in real time and they’ve already done so 18 times across his 36 farewell tour dates.
“WWE can change a story as it happens live,” Cena explained. “We’ve made a ton of pivots right there in the moment. As we get close to the end of this thing, what dictates those pivots is the audience.”
John Cena spoke on CM Punk and fan-fueled finale
John Cena’s promo on CM Punk ahead of their dream match at Night of Champions lit up the wrestling world, drawing direct parallels to Punk’s famous 2011 “pipebomb.” According to Cena, that fiery exchange wasn’t just for show, it reflected how deeply fan response shapes WWE’s creative direction.
“If you ever had a voice to use, if you ever wanted to say something… the time is now,” he said.
As the champion prepares to step into the ring with one of his greatest rivals in Saudi Arabia, the veteran believes the fanbase will guide the tone of his swan song.
John Cena vows there will be no comeback
In a separate appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, John Cena delivered a message that longtime fans might find bittersweet. When asked if he’d return for one more match after retirement, the 17-time world champion firmly shut the door.
“When I’m a step slower, I’m gone,” he said. “If you watch my stuff from 2015 and you watch my stuff today, I’m a step slower. So you know what? I’m gone.”
John Cena also said he has promised fans so he won’t return for sure.
He said, “Because I made that promise to these people behind me. And whether they like it or not, I know wrestling retirements aren’t real, because there’s always a payout involved. I’ve been in the business almost 25 years, and the business has been good to me.
“I’ve been smart with my money, and I will have a life without want, and I know how appreciated I am for that. I never once take that shit for granted. There is no amount of money, and there is not a check, and this is just a shot across the bow to any casino owner, to any territory owners, to any promotion owner, you can’t write me a check to bring me back.
“In December, I am done because of the promise I made to them. Whether I like them or I don’t, at least I go out keeping my word. And for them to understand that they may have some unpacking to do in their own personal lives, I get to sleep sound at night. I’m good. December, I’m gone.”
Cena’s final match is expected by the end of 2025. Whether he exits to cheers or boos, he’s making sure the ending, just like his legacy which is unforgettable.
