Cody Rhodes is the current Undisputed WWE Champion, who defeated Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 to win the title & end his historic reign. Cody, after winning the title became an asset to the SmackDown roster. Surrounded by new challengers on a completely new roster, Cody Rhodes found his first opponent.

He successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against AJ Styles in the main event of Backlash France. The match featured great wrestling with few details to Styles match with Dusty Rhodes, Stardust gimmick and more. One such notable thing is Cody using Brock Lesnar’s Kimura submission hold. Although it seems to be a casual mimicking, WWE fans on the internet found the real reason behind the move.

Reason behind Cody Rhodes use Brock Lesnar’s Kimura finisher

Cody Rhodes & Brock Lesnar had three matches last year starting from Backlash 2024. The move seems to be a reference to paying homage to last year’s Backlash PLE match, where Cody countered Kimura to pin Lesnar. Fans however referenced Cody’s old interview saying that he has a rule to loot the moves of wrestlers, if he fought him more than five times. He also adopted the Cody Cutter in the same way from Will Ospreay.

Cody Rhodes on an old interview said,

“My rule is, if I wrestle you more than five times, I can do all your stuff. It’s only my rule, and people hate it. I love the Cody Cutter. I think it’s better than an Os-Cutter, but I did get it from Will [Ospreay], so fair-play to Will, who’s super talented, beyond super talented. If I’ve wrestled you more than five times… I told Jay Lethal this once, and he hated it. He’s like, ‘No, wait, no, no, that’s not how it works.’ I can do your stuff, it’s just my rule,”.

“I’m waiting for someone to be like, ‘Hey, please don’t.’ But hey, I like to sponge. Part of what we do is, I got to lean into being a Rhodes, so I can do these Rhodes things. I got to lean into being part of the indie revival. I got all that, and I’m lucky to have been part of it. So I sponge off as much as I can. The Booker T roll [into the corner], which Jerry Lynn does as well, there’s a couple of Arn Anderson things that I do that are hard to visualize. It’s all someone else’s. I just try to put into a Nightmare package,”.

It is important to note that Cody Rhodes & Brock Lesnar had three matches and Cody earned Lesnar’s respect after winning the battle.
