The Madrid Open offers equal prize money to both male and female champions.

The main draw of the Madrid Open 2024 started on April 24, and the final of the competition will be played on May 5. The Madrid Open is one of the most crucial clay court events on the tennis calendar as it helps players gain momentum ahead of the biggest challenge, Roland Garros.

However, the Madrid Open has always been a home of controversies. From trophy designs to allegations of partiality, the tournament has managed to stay interesting for the tennis world. The first edition of the tournament was played in 2002 at the Madrid Open, and in 2024, the 22nd edition of the competition is going on at La Caja Mágica.

The Madrid Open takes place just after the conclusion of the Barcelona Open, usually at the end of April. Last year, Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s singles title, while Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka lifted the top accolade in the women’s singles category. A total of 92 players take part in the main draw of ATP as well as WTA singles events, while 32 pairs compete for the silverware in doubles.

Carlos Alcaraz is a two-time defending champion of the Madrid Open. Nevertheless, Rafael Nadal has been the most successful player in the tournament’s history, winning five titles. However, the King of Clay hasn’t won the Madrid Open title since 2017.

Meanwhile, Petra Kvitová has won three titles, which makes her the most successful woman at the WTA 1000 event; however, Aryna Sabalenka can equal the record if she manages to win this year. In men’s doubles, the pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have won five titles, while in women’s doubles, Sara Errini and Roberta Vinci have won the competition twice.
